This could be fun. When you were a kid....
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch?
Did you have chores?
Did you get an allowance?
Did you get paid for good grades?
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it?
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)?
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently?
Re: Parental Rules
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? YES! Let's see. We weren't allowed to watch MTV, VH1, most shows on Nickelodeon (especially "You Can't Do That On Television" - we'd get grounded if it was on and we got caught!).
Did you have chores? Not really - we were expected to keep our rooms cleaned and to help with dishes but nothing scheduled and if we didn't do those things, there weren't any consequences.
Did you get an allowance? Yes.
Did you get paid for good grades? Yes - $10 per A, $5 per B, nothing for C's. BUT if I got straight A's I would get $100.
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? Not really. I was told to be home by 11 when I was in 11th grade and 12 in 12th, but if I was going to be later, all I had to do was call.
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? My sister and I were both exected to graduate with a Bachelor's degree. I did and went to law school. My sister didn't - she had other career goals, but she went back to school and will have her degree in December.
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? I think I will be a little more strict with the curfew than my parents were. And I think I'll let my kids watch Nickelodeon!
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? No, I actually CHOSE not to watch TV for a few years. My parents thought i was nuts.
Did you have chores? Not regularly.
Did you get an allowance? Not regularly; if I needed money I could ask, but my parents rarely had extra money to give me.
Did you get paid for good grades? By my grandpa.
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? They never set a curfew; if I got home too late (like 10:30-11:00), I heard about it though! LOL
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? My entire family kind of put their expectations on me. I failed.
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? Wow... where to even begin. This is probably one of the strongest reasons neither of us wants to even THINK kids before we're financially stable/settled/comfortable. I want to encourage my kids more than I was (I only heard the bad things, even if they were teasing, they didn't feel like they were and I felt bad about myself) - I want to help them with their self esteem (not put so much pressure on being the pretty cheerleader and trying to focus on what each child has to offer). Obviously, raise my kids to live an active, healthy/balanced life instead of "What?! Are you on a diet or something?!?". I want to be more of a supportive, loving, caring parent than my parents were, and definitely more open than my dad was - I won't use fear to rule my house.
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? Married with Children lol
Did you have chores? Yeah, I have three sisters, I would always try to trick them into doing them
Did you get an allowance? I did
Did you get paid for good grades? yup!
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? In high school it was 1am
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? Yeah we had to go to college, there was no choice in it, I wanted to go though so it was ok
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? I think I will do most things pretty similar
This could be fun. When you were a kid....
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? Not that I can think of, I had an older brother so by the time I came around they had given up on things like that, and he babysat me a lot and just didn't care what I watched
Did you have chores? Yes
Did you get an allowance? Yes, but I don't remember it being consistent, I babysat for extra money and got my first real (paid taxes) when I was 14
Did you get paid for good grades? sometimes, there wasnt' any set amount, if I did good I remember my dad giving me cash
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? In high school it wasn't set in stone but they expected me home by midnight
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? We were not told what to do, we were very motivated kids, my parents would have supported any choice we made, but we were both sent on college, I'm the only one in our family with a masters degree.
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? We're a little bit stricter with our kids then my parents were, but beyond that I don't see much difference, I always said that if I could do half the job my parents with me I'd be satisfied with my parenting ability. I really had a great example, my parents have been married 37 years and I truly believe they love each other more with every year, and growing up that was obvious to us, which is something we try very hard to express to our children.
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? I'm sure there were. I just can't remember what they were.
Did you have chores? Yes.
Did you get an allowance? We didn't get a weekly allowance. Whenever we needed money for something for school or to go somewhere, that was considered our allowance.
Did you get paid for good grades? We wouldn't get money for good test grades or report cards. At the end of each school year we were allowed to get a small treat.
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? It wasn't a set curfew. It depended on where I was going and who I was going out with.
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? Yes. They expected me to go to college.
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? I don't know. I think we are going to take things as they come.
Were there any TV shows you were not allowed to watch? there were, but I don't remember
Did you have chores? yes, mine was dishes
Did you get an allowance? sometimes when times were good
Did you get paid for good grades? again, when times were good
Did you have a curfew (when you were old enough to go out on your own)? If so, what time was it? no, my parents trusted me a lot more than my brothers
Did your parents have any specific expectations for you (for instance, to go to college)? yeah, my mom really...i always felt like she was pushing me to do more because my older brothers didn't do much and now I think she is starting to push my brother under me to do better than the rest of us. I at least graduated college, but she always makes comments of how I really should go back. I feel like I failed her in a lot of ways...myself as well.
When you're a parent/now that you are a parent how will you do things differently? I will do a lot of things differently...I loved things when I was young...we always did things as a family and then as my parents got more focused on their work things changed and we weren't as close...I don't feel like I had a good relationship with my mom, not like my other friends had. We didn't get in fights or anything, but I didn't feel like I could talk to her either. I just want to make sure my family always comes first.
