Earth Hour = lame?

http://greenoc.freedomblogging.com/2009/03/26/let-there-be-dark-oc-la-kill-lights-in-global-warming-event/5931/

I keep getting emails from co-workers about this, and it seems like a lot of cities and such are participating. I am so skeptical about things like this, though. Is there really going to be any IMPACT? Any change? I keep thinking back to those emails I used to get about not buying oil for one day and then the gas companies would be FORCED to lower their prices!

What do you think? Important or lame?

Re: Earth Hour = lame?

  • I don't think it's lame.  I think it just proves a point in a small window.  If we all didn't waste electricity, we can cut down costs and the impact on the environment.  I think the "don't buy oil" thing is a sham, because if you don't buy gas today, you will still need it tomorrow.  We as humas can always improve upon the ways in which we use the earth and it's resources.  I think it definitely takes more than an hour to see an impact, but it's step one....if we can do it every day for 1 hour, that adds up!!
  • btw-I'm very skeptical of global warming and that being caused by humans....uh hello....dinosaurs, then ice ages....it's cyclical, so it's going to heat up and cool down.  It's natural.  Maybe we are speeding it up, but not by much.  I just think we need to be less wasteful of our resources!
  • My favorite thing about that blog is that it talks about the OC businesses that will be participating...right next to a picture of the Santa Monica ferris wheel.  Like the Register couldn't find a picture of the Spectrum wheel for this?

  • I don't necessarily think it's lame, but I don't think their campaign is all that great. If everyone were to participate, it would cause catastrophic power surges, which cost everyone more $$$ than the one hour of electricity.
  • I think that's the issue I have with it - it's rather gimmicky. Instead of powering off just for the sake of powering off, they're acting as though it's a springboard for major political action, and I just don't buy that.?

Well put!  It is rather gimmicky...Like I said in my last post, I like that it brings awareness to the issue.  But I agree that they are going about it in the wrong way.
