Tipping on take-out?

Do you tip when you go to a restaurant and get take-out?  If so, how much?

This past week has been busy so we have had take-out twice from regular restaurants (mmmm..cpk and a thai place).  I put a few extra dollars as a tip when I paid with my debit card becasue the tip line is there. I feel that since we didn't sit down and get waited on I don't want to leave a full tip (20%), but someone did take the effort to box and bag it up.  Am I being cheap?

Re: Tipping on take-out?

  • I just give them a few extra dollars.  Probably between 10 % 15%.  I think delivery people usually get paid more hourly than servers as well.
  • We don't get take out too often but if we do its from the one local pizza/sub shop and they have a tip jar on their counter so usually we'll throw some money in there but its not 20% or anything.
  • If we get food delivered to the house, we will tip.  But if we go somewhere to pick up a food order we've called in, we generally don't tip.  It never actually crossed my mind to do so!  Although thinking about it, we really don't order food from restaurants that often, more so we'll get hot food at the deli or subs/hot sandwiches from Subway or Quiznos and I don't think it's customary to tip at those places.
