Easter

As you know, we're hosting Easter for the first time.  I sent my siblings emails and tried to call those that don't regularly check their email (only 2; when I called the first, she gave me her new email and is the only one who's responded!)

When you invite people and say "just let me know if you'll be able to make it" do you expect them to respond? LOL  My family doesn't seem to get that (never have, so this isn't new.)

I know there will be 7 for sure, so I'll probably plan to feed 10 to be safe.  However people tend to just "show up", in which case I could actually have 20+ people at my house (that isn't even a stretch - that's assuming 2 families don't show up!)  How do you handle that kind of thing?  I obviously don't want to plan on cooking for TWENTY PEOPLE and then only 7 show up.  We would have leftovers and be throwing food out LIKE CRAZY.

Also, please critique:

Easter ham

Homemade potatoes au gratin

Steamed Broccoli/Cauliflower

Brown N Serve rolls

Vegetable tray

Grape Salad

Desserts

Holidays are pretty casual with my family, so this is pretty typical (casual food).  Do I really need to add anything?

Re: Easter

  • Rather than trying to guess, I would send out a follow up email that says something like "Hey!  I know you are all really busy but I am trying to plan the menu for Easter dinner.  I need to know how many are going to be here so I can make sure I have enough food!  X Y and Z have already committed so if anyone else thinks they will be coming (or thinks they MAY be able to make it), please email me back and let me know.  On that same thought, if you know you can't come, also let me know!"

    I like your menu.

  • Maybe you and Rich could come up. LOL  You can even bring your families... you guys have nice, normal families.
  • HA!  I would but I think I'm already committed to cooking for our church's Easter dinner that day.  They'd get upset if I bailed on them!
  • I think you should send up a follow-up  email like Mandy said. And as for your menu I think it's just the right amount of food and a good selection!

  • My family responds.  Sometimes I need to call some of them which is annoying.  Especially since they all have email.  I would try to get a rough count.  I hate not having enough food because people randomly decide to show up.

Your menu sounds great.  What is grape salad?
