Made Halupki today!

Today I learned how to make halupki! ?Finally! ?My dad is 50% Slovak so that makes me like 25% or something, so I have been eating this food for a while. ?Anytime we would visit my great-grandmother (from Slovakia when it was still?Czechoslovakia)?she would always have a pot of halupkis on the stove. ?It was the first meal we had in our house when we got back from our honeymoon, made by my mom and grandma. ?Now, I finally made it with my mom today! Its not very hard, but delicious! ?I am so happy I can carry on the tradition! ?

Re: Made Halupki today!

  • Yum!  I used to love halupki. I haven't had it in years. I can't really make them with my imitation meat because fake ground beef doesn't stick together very well Huh? I keep meaning to try to make a casserole version, but I haven't done it yet.

  • Ok what is halupki?  I don't think I have ever heard of it before.
  • Pretty much it is ground beef, rice, salt pepper, sometimes onions, rolled in cabbages leaves. ?Then you layer it in a pot with tomatoes and sour kraut! ?Yum!!
  • I love haluski (sp?).   I think that is the name of it...it's the dough and cabbage.  SO GOOD!
  • We call them piggies!  So yummy!

  • I like halushki too! ?Though I have not yet made that. ?My mom makes it at times.

I love haluski too!  That one I make all the time :)  Although we don't do the dough version.  We call noodles and cabbage haluski.

  • Both halupki and halushki are yum!  My gram is 100% polish so we have both quite often.

halupki aka pigs in a blanket are the "meatballs" in cabbage leaves with tomato sauce

     halushki is noodles and cabbage
