ladies involved with animal shelters-come in please

I know several of you are involved with animal shelters so I'm hoping you can help me.

We learned this weekend that friends of ours got rid of their 2 dogs (I know, I know) and took them to a shelter. I really wish they would have let us know before they did this because I cannot bear to see those dogs in a shelter.

Do you know if shelters will give out adoption 'records' /information over the phone? If I call their local shelters and tell them what I'm looking for, will they tell me if the dogs have been adopted? I didn't see them on petfinder.com or the individual websites but I don't know when they took them or how often they update their sites.

TIA.

Re: ladies involved with animal shelters-come in please

  • I suppose it depends on the shelter, but I don't see why they wouldn't tell you if you called. I think all shelters have a mandatory two or three day wait before they can adopt out any animals that come in, so if they just took them over the weekend, they are probably still there. Even if they update their site daily, they wouldn't be considered adoptable dogs until after the waiting peroid, so they probably wouldn't be on the website yet.  I know that the shelter I volunteer at only updates their site on Thursdays. Many dogs never even make it onto the adoptable dogs page because they come in after the page is updated for the week and get adopted before it gets updated again. They always say to call or come in to see if a particular dog is still there.  Good luck and thank you for trying to help out those poor puppies. I hope you find them :)
  • thank you pookielove, that is very helpful.

Our friend said that one was adopted the same day and the other dog was adopted 4 days later but I'm not 100% convinced. I need to hear it for myself before I can let this go.

If they have been adopted, I still won't be thrilled about it but I'll feel better then leaving them in a shelter when I could do something.

  • Hmm. That seems a little suspicious to me. I don't think a shelter would adopt out an animal the same day it was brought in.  I thought they had to hold them for a few days to make sure they aren't sick and get some idea of their personality.  Maybe I'm wrong.  Either way, I hope they've found good homes or that you are able to track them down.
  • Sorry to butt in here.

We adopted our dog from the YCSPCA a half-hour after the owner surrendered him. I don't know if that is normal or not. Good luck!
