Many of you may know that there is a virus called Conficker that is said to either be spread WEDNESDAY APRIL 1, 2009 or activated.
There are a reported 9-12 million computers with the virus and many more could be infected but not activated yet.
DH is a computer (genius in my opinion) he and some News websites have said that the virus is a worm, which (if you know then good, but for those who don't know what a computer worm is) it will eat and eat at your hard drive, pretty much like a worm burrowing through the ground eating everything as it goes deeper into the earth.
Be sure to
-run a virus scan
-delete/do not open any emails that you don't recognize the address to
-do not use your computer unless you must
The virus is more potent (for lack of a better term) to all WINDOWS PC models....not just that any PC really but the Virus was specifically written for Windows.
Be safe!
Re: IMPORTANT FOR ALL
This is exactly what I've seen - although it doesn't affect me (I'm a Mac girl), it's been interesting to read about (yes, nerd alert here - I find this fascinating, although it has nothing to do whatsoever with my job or anything else!).
The first strains hit computers back in late '08. This isn't some massive thing that's just going to overtake computers tomorrow, it's more that the host computer is scheduled to take over the millions of already-infected computers to turn them into zombie computers.
FWIW, the info I've read most recently is that if you've gotten automatic updates from Microsoft in March, you should be fine. This article from CNN has some good answers, as well.
GL to those of you who are PC users!
... every single day of forever.
Yes, if your version is up to date, it should be covered. This worm has been detected worldwide since Thanksgiving so it has been included in patches for awhile. This also have been able to track it and see which computers are infected and see the progress so they have been able to develop protection.
I don't use Norton, but I found info on their site and you should be protected but it also has info for those infected.
I run Symantec Antivirus (it scans every time I turn my computer on and I have it set to automatically receive updates) and it should of picked it up had you gotten it. Ad-aware is just a spy ware program so it wouldn't probably pick that up. I don't even use Ad-aware anymore. We used to use it at work years ago and when they changed their versions to the 2007 version it got crappy and our IT people made us stop using it because they weren't happy with the program.
Me&Mr.T:
Sorry I didn't get to you. Glad the other ladies did, DH didn't want me on. Guess we both didn't catch the fact the that virus could access the computer when it wanted.
I did see on the news that if you can't access the Microsoft website, then you may have problems.
