We are in the process of stripping layers and layers of paint off the mouldings in our bathroom and in that process we also stripped paint off all the old/original hardware on our medicine cabinet, linen closet door and the back plate behind the door knob (yes, they PAINTED over hardware! Who does that?). I'm honestly not pleased with the finish on that hardware now, either the paint ruined the finish or the stripper ruined the finish, either way, it's ruined. If I can't learn to live w/ it in it's current state I'm thinking we may be able to replace it. Does anyone know of places that carry old hardware? Places that specialize in hardware for restorations?
I need two latches like this: http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1292006&navCount=1
I'd also need hinges. The back plate for our door knob we can always swap out with the door in our attic, so no worries there.
Another quick question for those of you still with me
All the interior doors of our house have an oil rubbed bronze-ish finish on the hardware, very dark and I love it. The fixtures in our bathroom are chrome (faucet, toilet handle, towel bars, etc). Would you be more inclined to buy new hardware to match the fixtures or keep all door/cabinet hardware the ORB-ish finish (if I'm able to find replacements)?
Anyone confused??? I feel like I didn't explain myself well, sorry
Re: Looking for old/used hardware (cabinet/door)...help!
I would probably go with the ORB for all the door/cabinet hardware if your able to find replacements. It seems more in character with older homes even if they have been renovated or restored.
I know there's a site that you can get fixtures and accessories for older homes but I have to look for the blog that I saw it listed in. It was linked in one of the D&R girl's renovation blog of and older home...either Bunny or Re:Habi:Tat. Let me see if I can find it.
Sounds like you are having tons of fun!
There are a lot of places you can get old-style fixtures and hardware. I think even Home Depot or Lowes sells those latches like you posted (I've looked into those before, too). If you're looking online, rejuvenation.com has stuff like that, too, or you could even try ebay. Supposedly, there is a place in York called the Architectural Warehouse that is supposed to carry original hardware and things like that (correct me if I'm wrong, Denise!)
As for the ORB question, that's tough. In my house, they have brass finishes for doorknobs and hinges for all the 'living areas' but the bathrooms and original kitchen all had the silver finishes. I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose, but I'm not sure of the reason for it...maybe the brass was considered 'dressier' back then. I think it's totally up to you what style you'd like to go for.
Found it!!
It's called Rejuvenation...and here's the link to their cabinet hardware page...

Thanks for your help thus far ladies. I was just looking on rejuvenation.com and while their stuff is nice and would prob. work for what we need/want - holy crap is some of their stuff $$$! I think if we went that route we'd have to replace the stuff slowly over time vs. all at once. Restoration Hardware's prices are better but I'd have to measure to be sure they'd work first...maybe take a trip to KOP to see and feel them in person too.
I should take pics of our door knobs to see what you ladies think is the true finish... I'm saying ORB, but now I'm questioning if that's correct. They may just be that dark because they're old??? And while I'm at it, I should snap a few pics of what the stripped cabinet hardware and hinges look like now after removing the paint, it almost looks like aged copper!
Jill - I did look at our Lowes and HD and the only latches they have are brass, have you seen them at either store in any other finish?
I'm thinking if I can find what I need in chrome we may just go that route since I think it'll flow better w/ all the other fixtures in our bathroom and it may be the less expensive way to go at this point. So frustrating no matter which way you look at it, not fun at all! But I know once it's done I'll feel a lot better about it knowing it was done right and we didn't just slap another coat of paint over it and call it a day... now if only I could get my clawfoot tub refinished and a tile floor put in while I'm at it, I'd be a really happy girl!
Charlene - I'll check our HD today when I head out there. I could have sworn I saw those hinges somewhere in a silver finish at some point.
This is where we got hardware for our kitchen -

I called my SIL to ask her about a site she found, she couldn't remember it. It may have been knobdepot.com, but the site I am thinking of had a red background.
I haven't been to any of the places in York lately. The cool one moved and I haven't been to their new location.
Thanks for your help ladies. I'm not sure what we'll do yet or what finish we'll go with if we do buy all new, but we have a bit of time to decide. I think this is going to be a loooong project!
