coyotes in South OC
Yikes!
Long story short.... we live in a condo, and outside our front door, there is a sidewalk that ends with a small clearing. We let our dog out there sometimes (off leash) to pee. Last night, around 1030, H let her out, and as she was sniffing around, he decided to look behind him. On the sidewalk, creeping up was a coyote! It was totally going to go after my dog.
H yelled at our dog to get inside before our dog saw the coyote. Thank God, cause our dog thinks she is an attack dog and would have probably ran after and started barking at the coyote.
Once my H yelled at our dog, the coyote then ran away.
I would have died if she got eaten. No more off leash adventures for her.

This is why I hate taking my rats out around dusk, that's the time I see the coyotes the most. They are so effing shameless but DH says "they gotta eat too" - well damn fine but don't eat our precious pets!
Supposedly they are more afraid of you than you are of them, but they still scare the bejeezus out of me. I'm always afraid they will jump out of the bushes bc I have seen SO MANY coyotes come out of greenery along the road. We live near canyons though.
I'm so glad she is ok - be careful! Man seriously that freaks me out. I won't even repeat the cat and coyote story from years ago. <shudder>
We had a pack of coyotes come down our street 3 weeks ago yelping & screaming (hunting cries) - we counted five but it was dark, it could have been more. Since then we don't let our kids out after dark in the backyard unless we're back there (even though we back up against more houses, our front fence is short enough that our German Shepherds could clear if if they so desired).
I'm glad your pup is okay, though, it's so scary!

A few years ago, at our first apartment in Mission Viejo, my husband and I saw a ginourmous raccoon hanging out on the trashcan area. We didn't want to mess with that thing, and backed away slowly. ; ) And then there was a snake in front of the door next to us. We always said that if we ever saw a mountain lion, we were outta there! (The apartment was next to a large open clearing; I think it was a reserve of sorts.)
My mom's neighbors had a run-in with a coyote a few years back. They're also in Mission Viejo, but not near any clearings. A coyote had jumped into their backyard and had their little dog in its mouth. My brother heard the commotion and ran outside to see what was going on. The noise of him coming out there startled the coyote, and it actually dropped the dog before running away. The dog had a few scratches/punctures on it, but was okay. It was a CLOSE call, though.
We used to let our dogs run around off leash all the time in the field across the street. Then H saw a few coyotes over there... and we started noticing tons of rabbit skins. So we stopped letting Maganda off leash, but would still let Football off.
The coyotes have some balls to come all the way into our complex and onto the sidewalk though... I thought they would stick to the park and trails. They must be really hungry!
I've noticed this too. I am seeing them more and more in places that are far from the canyons, wtf! I agree they must be hungry. I remember one running down my street and I thought it was someone's lost dog from behind and here I was running after it saying "Puppy puppy!! Want a TREAT?! A TREAT?!! Come! Come!" Stupidass. It was a fekking coyote turns out.

D, I've made the same mistake. Once I saw a pair of coyotes walking across Chapman Ave and Tustin in Orange. That intersection is super busy,huge, and far from the hills, so I assumed they were dogs.
It was sad.
Glad your doggie wasn't attacked.
When I lived at the end of 19th st in Costa Mesa, the coyotes would come up into our neighborhood. I always made sure my cat and the dog would be inside before dark.
