Name-change question

Hey girls - I just got married and had a name-change question. Do you know if New Mexico allows you to make your maiden name your middle name without a court order?

Re: Name-change question

  • I don't believe you need a court order.  I am doing the same thing, though I took the wrong documentation to the social security office and sadly, over two years later, haven't returned to get it done.  The guy at the SS office didn't indicate I needed anything other than the proper documentation.  Nor did the county clerk's office say anything about needing a court order. I don't think you will have a problem.

I checked the NM state statutes and they don't have anything specifically saying you can't. Your best bet would be to contact a lawyer just to be sure.  (I wouldn't trust the folks in teh county clerks office to know.  I get people forwarded to me all the time form county clerks offices to handle paperwork that is a county filing, not a state filing; so my trust of county clerks is pretty darn low.)
