Teaching kids about sex

If anyone caught Oprah yesterday it was VERY interesting and eye opening.  They where talking to parents and teens about sex and telling parents how and when they should speak to their kids about sex and I was amazed listening to these 12 and 13 year olds talk and how much they know and do....It's like oral sex is like kissing!!!

They showed a mom having a very in depth sex talk with her 10 year old b/c the 10 yr old wanted to know.  I think it's a shame that kids are loosing their innocence so early anymore.  I mean I completely agree that you have to tell your kids everything so they know what to be aware of but I feel like they are so young.  They then went on to tell you that once your child is 15 you should talk to them about "self pleassure"....they belive that if you teach them this they won't be looking for it from another person at a young age.  I can't even imagine talking to my kid about that at 15.

What does everyone else think of this!  I'm just amazed...I mean I'm only 28 and I can't remember being 10 and even wondering what sex are....or being 12 and knowing what oral sex was.

Very crazy....my fiance now doesn't want any girls :)

Re: Teaching kids about sex

  • It was good. Its DVRed for my mom AND DH, who is not gonna be able to deal when our daughter gets older:)?

I actually agreed with the doc on many things- I am not as worried for me since I teach middle school and kids ask me questions sometimes.?

  • I agreed with the Dr too...and I was shocked how a lot of the moms didn't like what she was saying but she made sense it everything she said.

I guess I haven't really been around kids that age lately but I amazed at all the know!

  • I normally can't stand Oprah, but now I kind of wish I'd caught it.  My older daugher is 12, she's in middle school, and I know I have to have this conversation with her soon but I am really dreading it.  I don't know what to say or even how to approach it.  My cousin's daughter is also 12 and the two of them are best friends.  My cousin and I were just talking about how different 12 is now from when were 12 (she's a few years older).  12 now is like what 15 or 16 was when I was a kid.  And I'm not THAT old, so times are really changing.

  • You can probably find the info on oprah.com......I only watch the shows with interesting topics.  I told my fiance I'm saving it for our future kids to watch
  • I wish I had caught it.  It amazes me how much kids know (and are intered in) at such a young age. I work with hs students and they are so casual about everything.  My coworker has a 13 year old daughter and she was telling me about how she told her mom that she broke up with her bf bc he wanted to do things sexually that she wasnt ready for.  She was in 7th grade at the time!  She tells her mom how the girls in her grade have oral sex and send the boys pictures of themselves via text or im.  It shocks me.
