Bikram yoga

What's the deal? Seems like a lot of you ladies are into it lately. Do you like it? If I am "eh" towards regular yoga, would it be like torture? What is the point of it being so hot while you do it?

Re: Bikram yoga

  • I like it!  I think a lot of us are hitting the Bikram hard core right now for 1 reason: 2 week introductory unlimited usage pass!  After that it gets kinda pricey to go that often.

I blogged about it here http://gimmeskinny.blogspot.com/2009/03/bikram-yoga-holey-crap.html

    Try it!

  • I still stand by my theory that the only reason it is done in such a hot room is because it just happens to be naturally that hot in India where the dude created the practice. He just brought the hot aspect of it stateside to make bikram standout from all the other forms of yoga.

  • I used to do it three times a week, and I liked it. However, it cut into my marathon training and I hated drinking that much water.
  • Ditto re: 2 week intro rate. When next week is over I'llbe sad to bid it adiue but at about $20 a session  I'm going to have to give it up and I'll be back to regular yoga.

I'm on my 4th class and so far I REALLY enjoy it. But I also like regular yoga too.  My first class was murder. Like, I really wanted to die. lol I was dizzy and naucious but apparently that's normal for 1st timers?

It's definately not a serene class and a pretty intense work out.

The next few classes were fab. Great work out and my skin feels fab also.  (probably from all the hydrating and release of the toxins of the skin through sweat)

Today I'm totally looking forward to it because I have gnarly lactic acid build up from TKB yesterday. I'm looking forward to flushing all that out and stretching today.

  • I personally like regular yoga better overall (and Yogafit specifically!) but it is fun trying something new. I don't think I would be going after the two week trial, but mine just started Thursday, so I still have another week and a half to use it up.

You're probably right! People love their new trendy forms of exercise!

Thanks for the blog info, 10yt! My workout routine is starting to bore me, so it may be worth looking into. Maybe it's best to start with regular yoga since I haven't done it in....7 years or something.

  • I LOVE Bikram!

Where do you ladies practice? Anyone go to Huntington Beach Hot Yoga on Adams and Magnolia?  =)

  • We have been going to one in South Irvine off of Jeffrey
  • The point of Bikram is to loosen your muscles up with the heat to make you more limber.  This is supposed to cut down on injuries and help you perform better yoga.  (at least according to a Bikram site I looked up a few days ago)
  • $29 is a great bargain for Bikram!  I need to start some kind of program to get in shape for an upcoming wedding to stave off well-meaning but unintentionally mean relatives :)  What class do you girls take generally at the Irvine location?  With work constraints, I probably have to pick between the 6:00am or 6:30pm and later options.  Anyone take any of those classes?

  • A few of us have been doing the 6:00 am classes a couple times a week, but the more I do it, the less I like it. I don't mind sweating, but when I completely soak a bath towel and have to drink water constantly for two days before I feel normal again, that's a bit much for me. I still have another week left, but I won't be signing up for any more sessions.
  • First class today was humiliating Embarrassed I thought I was going to pass out and wasn't even 15 minutes into the session!  But, I'm going to try it again and see if going in the morning is easier on me than the afternoon.  I don't think the cheese enchiladas that I had for lunch right before helped my "form" Stick out tongue
