Visiting this weekend - help please!

Hi - My husband, 17 month old and I will be in Chicago Friday-Monday. We're going to a Cubs game on Sunday and I'm trying to figure out the best plan for Sunday. We're thinking either the aquarium or field museum - which one is better? Is it feasible to think we might make it to both in one day? Also, I'd appreciate any restaurant suggestions (including breakfast) in the Congress & Michigan area, as well as your opinion on whether Navy Pier and Millenium Park are worth a visit. TIA!

Re: Visiting this weekend - help please!

  • My husband and I just moved to Chicago a few weeks ago, but I have been to the Field Museum and I would say that it's too much for a 17 month old to be able to see everything, it's huge.  It is definitely an all day trip in it's self, but it is fun, and you can't beat seeing the huge dinosaur bones.  You wouldn't be able to do both the Museum and Aquarium.  My husband has done the Aquarium and said it's nice, and I love doing things like that.  There is a free zoo at Lincoln Park that is open daily.  I really enjoy Navy Pier, but I think there might be a festival this weekend, so I would check on that.  There are a few restaurants there.  I really like Millennium Park, it's a nice place to hang out.  I hope that helps!  I'm still new, so hopefully someone else will be able to give you some help too!
  • I think you could do both the aquarium and the Field Museum in one day, but it really depends on how much time you want to spend at each. You probably wouldn't be able to get through the bulk of both. I think that if I had to choose one (considering you have a 17-month-old), I'd probably pick the aquarium. However, it's not that much different from other aquariums if you've been to others. The Field Museum is probably a bit more unique.

I'd say Millenium Park and Navy Pier are both worth a visit. I recommend an architectural boat tour from Navie Pier if you like that kind of thing.

  • I believe the big tank at the aquarium is empty right now, they are doing repairs and lent all the animals out to other aquariums....you might want to call them and check it out.  It really wouldn't be worth it to me to go if that is the case.
  • Hi- I'm totally piggybacking here rather than doing a separate post. I am a DC nestie who is coming to Chicago for a long weekend with my DH in August and I was hoping for restaurant suggestions. We're staying at the Intercontinental and (like OP) going to a Cubs game. I'd love to try some great restaurants while we are in town, anything downtown, hip, fun, etc. would be great. Anything with great food that people who actually live in Chicago go to! Thanks so much.
  • i have a list of my favorite restaurants in my bio...  maybe that will help?   not all are kid friendly, though.

i would recommend the aquarium over the field museum, but only if the big tank is full.   if its empty like PP said, go for the field museum.
