POLL: Cleaning

For household cleaning and chores do you just use the regular, pre-made store cleaning products (Method, Mrs. Meyers, etc) or do you use things like borax, vinegar, etc.

If you use vinegar, borax, etc how and what do you use them on?

Re: POLL: Cleaning

  • I'm a big fan of most of the Method products and I've never used the Mrs. Meyers stuff since I haven't seen it in stores but I've been trying other things in recent times especially if it means saving money.

Although the smell of vinegar makes me ill, I like to use it to clean the microwave, clean the dishwasher, and I've put it in with towels in the laundry.

  • I mostly use bought cleaners.  What I use depends on the project.  I still like Windex for cleaning glass, and I use a special stainless steel cleaner for the appliances.  I've been using 409 for the kitchen as well.

I would like to start using vinegar for the floors as I think that might be a better option.

  • I use bought cleaning materials, but I would like to use some vinegar for some kitchen products (like my stove and the microwave).

  • I mostly use pre-made cleaners, and not even the "green" type most of the time. :( Cutesguy had an insane stock of cleaning supplies before I married him and we STILL haven't used them all up.  He used to have a compulsion for buying them every time he went to the store, and he had a BJ's membership then.

I am really careful about fumes when it comes to shower cleaners though. My MIL got me this pink Power Paste stuff that does a great job.  It's an enzyme, so no odors at all, and it doesn't really require scrubbing.   I am planning to switch to greener products for cleaning our countertops.  I want to try the Method wipes.

We mostly have hardwood floors in our house, and honestly, we probably only mop them once every couple of months.  For weekly cleanings, we just vacuum them (by we, I mean DH, that's his job).

  • I do a combo of store bought and vinegar depending on what I need to clean. Sometimes the "natural" way just doesn't get it all clean.

I am also completely in love with the magic eraser. If you  haven't tried one yet, you are missing out on some easy tub cleaning!

  • I use store bought cleaners. However, I do use vinegar to clean windows and mirrors- it doesn't seem to streak.  Sometimes I use vinegar and baking soda in the laundry.

  • I really like the Mrs Meyers line... I like the different scents.
  • I've actually started using vinegar and rubbing alcohol as my two favorite household cleaners--- not mixed together. The vineger is great for a lot of stain... you can add baking soda to it to create a paste I think...or was that for a volcano..? Anyway, The rubbing alcohol is great for mirrors and stainless. I've tried Meyers all natural for stainless, smells great, doesn't work IMO. I also use Clorox green spray for the counters and the stove.. stuff like that. HATE the floor cleaner by them. I can't get it to rinse clean. It keeps sudsing.

  • We use the store bought stuff but recently we have been using a lot of the green products.  I used vinegar once in our coffeepot but that was it.  The "make-it-yourself" stuff really intrigues me though....I always say to myself that I am going to use a recipe that I have read in a magazine and then never do.  I guess it is too easy to fall back on the store bought stuff.

  • I use vinegar for almost everything.  I just filled old Windex bottles with a mixture of half vinegar and half water and I use it as an all purpose cleaner.  I use that for counters, sinks, mirrors, and windows. For floors, I do vinegar, hot water, and a little bit of soap.  I throw a little bit of vinegar in with all of our laudry.  I use lemons in a bowl of water and boil it for a few minutes to clean the microwave. Then I toss them down the garbage disposal to freshen that.  I've tried Method products and I really liked them, but vinegar is so much cheaper and I don't have to have a million different products cluttering things up.

Two things that come to mind that I don't use natural products on are the shower and the drains.  I tried the vinegar and it worked eventually but not as easily as Scrubbing Bubbles.  I think I'm going to try borax or baking soda next time with the vinegar for that.  Then there's the drains. I tried to clear a slow sink once with vinegar and baking soda and it was a disaster.  I still use Draino for that.
