Okay - I am officially distracted today. So on Friday, May 1st my best friend (besides DH) and I are planning on making the drive to Louisville, KY for the Kentucky Derby. We've always wanted to go and figure we'd better do it before we start having kids and such. DH is cool with it too! Yay! We must keep it cheap, but I'm just wondering if any of you know of any good and quick touristy places or restaurants to stop on the interstate. I know most of you don't live in this area... but... we'll be hitting Southern Minnesota and then Madison, WI, outskirts of Chicago, all of Indiana along I-65 and then Louisville.
The best website I've found is roadsideamerica.com but they don't have a lot of great ideas for where we'll go through. Any thoughts???? Anyone been to derby before and have advice for us as we brave the infield?
Re: Roadtripping Across America.. well almost!
That sounds so fun! I want to go to the derby so bad!! I watch it every year dreaming of being there.
Dh and I have talked about moving to KY a bit, he isn't exactly excited about my expensive hobby or that Im getting our 2 year old daughter excited about horses.
I am not help on suggestions on where to stop, but I know you will have a blast!
Ohh that is so exciting!!! Hmm, I have no suggestions for you as to where you can go, sorry! But that is still really fun!! My sister and I road-tripped from Florida to Kentucky when our Papa was dying. We stopped and stayed at this crazy motel in GA, and then the next day we drove to TN and went to Ruby Falls, then we drove on to KY, it was a ton of fun!! (sad circumstances), but it was really fun!!
G/L, and have tons of fun!!
B.K. (I'm taking a wild guess that those may be your initials:)
Thanks for the vote of confidence on the derby! I noticed from your poll response that you used to be a horse riding instructor. Very cool! My BFF Nicole who I am going with got her first horse about age 10 after much begging to her parents. I've know her since we were preschoolers so I was around when she got that first horse. She taught me to ride too. I think she has 4 horses now and is a self taught trainer and has trained many of her own and some for other people 2. I look forward to heading to the derby with her. I'll have to take some goods pics for you and come back and post them on the nest!
thom- yes they are my maiden ones...I just didnt want to make a new profile.
That is so cool about your friend! I leased a horse pretty much my whole life...well not really but for a LONG time. He was mine considering I paid for everything and took care of him, but when I got pregnant the lady all of the sudden was like o you cant ride anymore I will find someone else to lease him....and she was a close family friend..needless to say it sucked big time! My daughter gets so excited when we pass a horse or she sees one on tv...it makes Dh so mad that she is going to be hooked! As you can tell I love to talk about horses...I will stop now before I bore you.
I have no suggestions ther than going into Chicago to walk around and see some sights if you've never been. Other than Chicago, I haven't seen any of the mid-west.
One of my dreams is to one day take a cross country road trip. I hope you have a blast!!!! Stop in some dive places along the way, they sometimes have the best food...and take LOADS of photos to share when you get back!

ohhhh, about GA...
DH and I decided a few weekends ago that we aren't going to be moving. ...i thought I had updated you/everyone on this...apparently not, i just got my computer fixed on monday so I forget what all i've said and what not... SO... DH and I were fishing over on the beach 2 weekends ago and we were driving around from spot to spot and i said I honestly don't think I can move away from this. ... DH agreed. --We talked some more, decided we didn't want to raise our kids away from our families, we want them to be close to their grandparents and cousins. I have 6 sisters, so there will be alot of cousins!
And Thanks! I love my TTD pics as well, I am actually doing another TTD shoot on April 26 in Daytona Beach. I'm excited!!! all for freeee, yayyyy!!!
Thom, your road trip sounds absolutely AMAZING!!! SOO MUCH FUN!!! You have to take pics!!! I'm not to familiar with that area at all. I've been to Chicago (LOVE IT!!) i've been to springfield, missouri, branson, missouri (i don't think you'll be going through there? not sure) but I think ya'll are going to have a great time!! I know carrie (haydence) used to live (i think) in Louisville and I know her DH is from that area. I know she could give you some pointers!! And yes definitely stop at the cute road side dive diners!!! LOVE THEM!! Are ya'll gonna get all dressed up for the derby and wear pretty dresses and big hats?? hehe
Yay for free! Free is always good. 6 sisters - holy cow! I've got 4 and it feels like a lot. But, I do agree that it's hard to be far away from family. You may have put this update somewhere and I missed it:)
Hope you feel fully at peace with the decision - which is sounds like you do - and that you find a job that is fulfulling and makes you happy. Can't wait to see more TTD pics. I REALLY makes me want to do one, but I don't know if DH is up for any more pictures
Megan - we'd love to wear the big hats and fancy clothes... It just depends on whether we splurge on these last minute tickets in the grandstand, OR we just pay our $40 to get into the infield. In the infield, I think very casual attire is the way of the day. We're going to sound funny in KY with our Minnesota accents.... I can already picture it.
Hopefully Carrie joins in this post and gives some pointers. Otherwise I may have to page her
DH didn't go to my first TTD shoot, and he isn't doing this last one either. I know he wouldn't want to, so I don't really care. The second one I am doing is for a "photo safari", my photographer is in some photographers guild and they all meet in a location and shoot till their hearts are content. So she took the TTD idea to her last meeting and they agreed. My friend was going to do it w/ my, but she wasn't able to come down from GA. so i guess they are going to find another bride, and then I think there is a highschool girl that is going to do her prom dress- kinda cool!
Lisa, do you have Facebook, or myspace? my TTD pics are up on both. If you don't i'll upload them to photobucket tonight.
Yay, road trip! So I am all about the food, and though I don't know a lot about your route I have two great recommendations:
-Mickey's Dairy Bar in Madison, WI: Biggest pancakes you have every seen (seriously they are like the size of my laptop...for one!) and delicious milk shakes
-Lambert's in Branson: I don't know if you are even driving through there, but if you go by one you have to stop! They are the "home of the thrown rolls" but also it is this hilarious midwest place where they have all the high school teens in town schlepping around to tables handing out fried okra, potatoes, macaroni & tomatoes....It is definitely something to experience and the food is pretty tasty too.
I have always wanted to go to the Derby, so have fun!
