E-mealz?

Has anyone ever tried this?  It looks good in theory - they plan out your meals for a week (if it's just 2 of you, they give you 5 meals, if you're a "family" you get 7).  Gives you a shopping list and tries to keep your weekly grocery budget for dinner under $75, much less if shopping for 2.

The only downside I see is I'm fairly certain they don't give calorie counts (although they do have a low fat menu option) and you are stuck with what they give you - so if you don't like salmon, you have to make up something else for that day.  Although, for only $15 every 3 months, it doesn't sound like that bad of a deal...

Re: E-mealz?

  • I've never heard of this... is it online?  I think for $15/3 months, it's definitely worth a shot! LOL  Especially if our grocery budget would drop significantly like this!

I agree - I'd be slightly concerned with what they gave me.  For instance, if they regularly gave us salmon and didn't allow us to opt out of seafood,... well, how would we survive since MH doesn't like seafood?

Also, how can they make sure it'll be under $XX/week?  I would think the difference in prices from store to store would kill them!

  • My friend uses something similar, she loves it.
  • They have stores you can chose from (however, since it's just 2 of us, the only option is Walmart as our store).  They do post the general walmart prices of each item to show you how much you'll spend.  For example, for one week they have everything coming in under $35 on their sample with one fish meal.  I suppose I could make another meal (or sub chicken for fish) those days.  I think I'll try it.  They have the low-fat option and the regular option...which should I chose?
  • I haven't heard of it, but if it's like Dinner By Design then I would try it.  MIL went to Dinner By Design last year when we moved after selling our townhome and most of the meals were really good!!
  • Mandy, did you see that they also have "Points for 2" options?  (As in WW points?  I know you don't follow WW, but it might be as good or possibly better than the "low fat" option.)
  • I did see that but I hadn't looked at the sample meals yet.  I should do that.  The options that I saw as lowfat or regular were both pretty nice.  I could definitely eat that.  ;)
  • I looked at the lowfat Walmart options for 2 versus the points options for any store for 2.  Both menus looked decent and I probably would've eaten any of it.  The nice thing is the points menus DID give the # of points for the things they posted, but of course if you don't do WW, it doesn't really help you.

The recipes are fairly straight forward, so you could fairly easily keep track of what you were eating (ex: 3/4 lb chicken breast for 2-3 people + a little flour, cooking spray, salt & pepper, etc.)

The ONLY thing I think it cheats on a little is that it doesn't count staples and includes SEVERAL things as staples (FF mayo, RF mayo, eggs, cooking spray, salad dressings... if you got hit with buying a couple of those each week if you didn't have them, your "$35/week couple bill" could QUICKLY become about $50/week, not to mention any additional produce or breakfast/lunches you'd need.  For instance, I think one of the samples said it used FF ranch one night and FF Catalina the next.  I have neither of those in my fridge, so I'd end up spending ~$7-9 on salad dressings that week.)

HOWEVER... for dinners alone to cost us ~$35-40/week?!  That is definitely something I think I'm bringing up to Greg. LOL

  • It's a good idea! I'll check out the site...but I'm nervous since I'm such a picky eater that most of the meals I wouldn't eat.

If you sign up Mandy let us know how you like it.

  • I signed up.  I figure a lot of the staples I actually do have.  Plus you can always change some of them (like instead of FF ranch, use a regular dressing).  The two meal plans I have access to right now look pretty promising.  I usually end up spending about $100 a week.  I think that if i follow this I will drop down to around $70 or $80 a week (including what I buy for the remaining 2 meals, lunches, breakfasts).  Our lunches usually cost almost nothing (a loaf of bread and two packs of lunch meat last us 2 weeks).
  • I'm definitly going to check this out.  Haven't looked at the sight yet, but DH is a picky eater so wondering if the meals would satisfy him.  I'd save some money so it may be worth it.
