Question for all you N.O. mommies
Hi all

I'm just wondering about Lamaze classes and any other classes that might be worthwhile for me to take. I've heard from some that when it came down to the actual labor, they were in too much pain to really worry about the breathing techniques they learned in Lamaze classes. What classes did you take, and which did you find to be the most useful/helpful? I plan on breastfeeding so I think I definitely want to take a class on that. Should I skip the Lamaze classes? I'm guessing insurance doesn't cover any of this, right? And how do I go about signing up for such classes? Where do they offer it? Sorry for all the questions. This is going to be our first so I'm totally clueless

TIA!!

Re: Question for all you N.O. mommies
My hospital (West Jeff) and my friend's hospital (Lakeside) offered classes to moms registered to deliver there....free of charge.
I have 3 younger siblings and DH is an only child but worked summer camps (i'm telling you this for a reason:)) We thought the only beneficial class was the breastfeeding class. If you have been around lots of kids and pretty much know common sense stuff I'd skip the classes. We were amazed at some questions that were asked.
Anyway, at each class we took we did come away learning one or two new things. For me it was worth it, for DH he would have skipped all of them.
Alex was breech and from 12 weeks pg they knew he'd be breech because of a uterine condition I have. I didn't worry about a lamaze class. However, the birthing class was insightful because if you are having a vaginal birth and you don't know what goes on down there you may (OR MAY NOT) want all that info in your head.

Obviously, I had no need for any kind of childbirth classes (hello, surgical extraction) but I do know that Ochnser (where I had the boys) also had free classes if you were delivering there. I was going to go to the breastfeeding class but I ended up delivering the next day, so I wasn't able to make it.
Where will you be delivering?

Thanks for the info guys! I have the option of delivering at Lakeside or East Jeff. I was born at East Jeff. myself so I thought it would be kind of neat if the baby was born there too

West Jeff offers classes for free. You can also ask your ob office, I am sure they have a list of local classes offered. I only went to the breastfeeding class. I found it very helpful. I nursed my daughter for the first six months and if I had not attend the class I would have given up after day 2. I found out some very intreasting facts. Good luck and congrats!

If you do want to pay for classes, there is one being offered at Touro (you don't have to deliver there). They have a weekend one and an 8 week long one. We're doing the weekend one. They do cost, but maybe this will be an option for you? Here's the link to the descriptions (balance born and prepared and positive are the ones I looked into).
