Moms Come in: Re: Private Preschools

I need a list of private preschools in the area to check out.

I heard there's a D Magazine list somewhere, but haven't been able to locate it online.

Any specific ones to look into/stay away from?

So far, I have:

Creme de la Creme

Merryhill

Top of the World

** I really don't know much about Montesourri, but from what I know about it, I really wouldn't prefer it for Jack. We live in Mckinney, so wouldn't want to travel much further than the surrounding areas( Allen, Frisco, maybe plano etc)

  • We really love Creme de la Creme.
  • I worked at the Creme in Coppell for about a month. I am typically anti daycare, but if I had to put my future children into any sort of all day care I would go to Creme de la Creme. I have worked at a few different places and it is by far the best as far as staff and curriculum go. It is run more like a school and keeps the kids busy and engaged. And because they switch classrooms all day the teachers tend to get a little bit of a break (which means they are in a better mood) and the kids just don't get bored like I have seen in other centers.

  • Can I ask what your concerns are regarding Montessori?  We have had a ton of success with Sophie being in a Montessori program and I am interested to see what your thoughts are on it?  No flames, just interested.

  • We take our DS to Primrose. I know someone in McKinney that takes their kids there and is really happy with it too.

  • What is the difference in preschool and daycare? I'm not returning to work, so I don't need something full time.

Techinically the difference is daycare is purely child care, preschool is school where they are learning not just being watched by adults, but really most places do learning activities once they are 12-18 months and older. You might want to check into something like Mother's Day Out if you are not going to have him there full time. Some places don't do part time care, I forget what age Creme starts it. But usually part time care is 2 or 3 full days a week. Are you looking for full days or just partial days?

  • I know the Primrose in McKinney will do part-time b/c my friend does that. They probably do it on a case by case basis or something.

  • keep in mind that there are a lot of preschools that use the Montessori name but don't necessarily follow the Montessori method - so even if you don't think Montessori is the right approach for your child, they may still do well in a school that uses the name
  • Ok, I haven't logged in in forever, but dug out my log on info to answer this one!

Preschool and daycare have the same cirriculum (give or take - but it's the same in the big picture when the kids go to kinder).  Daycare means they are open for full time care - so that includes cirriculum and also the daycare aspect of playing with the kids, meals, snacks, nap time, etc. while the parent works.  Preschool only covers the cirriculum part and not the extended hours of care.  However, the terms 'daycare' has a negative sound about it so alot of daycare are calling themselves preschools to sound more positive.  It's very confusing - but the bottom line is true preschools are not as expensive as the daycare environment because of the hours of care they provide.  We went to Top of the World and it's a daycare - don't know why they call themselves a private preschool, I never could understand that.  They are not great in my opinion and we left and won't return back.  We go to a daycare in Frisco now and they are so much better, I can't even tell you.  If you are wanting a true preschool then check out Apple Creek in Allen.  www.applecreekpreschool.com  If you get those McKinney magazines - like McKinney Living, etc., the preschools take out ads in there all the time.  All of the ones you have listed are daycares.

I honestly wouldn't send my child to a daycare to get preschool cirriculum if I had the choice - even if it was part time.  Teacher turnover, too many kids, etc., it's really hard on the kids and you learn the same things at either place.  I would send them to a true preschool though or MDO (again, if I had the choice - obviously we are going the daycare route).  Check out churches too to see if they have preschool programs too.  Good luck!
