The Kite Runner

Have any of you ladies read this book? ?I just got finished with it. ?It was a great book, but oh so sad... ?What did you think? ?Its crazy, I read Three Cups of Tea and really learned a lot about the Muslim culture. ?Then, I read this book, I know its fiction! But still, it was crazy to read. ?Two very different extremes!

Re: The Kite Runner

  • Love, Love, LOVED both of those books!  I couldn't put the Kite Runner down...  I watched the movie (Kite Runner) too, but liked the book better.  Three Cups of Tea was a fab read also!

I'm particularly interested in books from that part of the world due to hubby having been deployed to Afghanistan -- when he was over there I read as much about it as I could, and did my senior thesis in college on Women and Education in Afghanistan.  It's an amazing culture to learn about.

  • They are both fabulous books. I just returned in March from my first trip to Pakistan (my husband is from there) and it truly was amazing to experience the culture firsthand.
  • If you liked?Khaled Hosseini's first book, you'll like A Thousand Splendid Suns too. I think I actually enjoyed that more than the kite runner.

  • Loved both the Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, which is a similar style of storytelling, but from a woman's perspective.  Even though they are fiction, they are drawn mostly from real world conditions.

I'll never forget reading the part in ATSS about societal constraints and realizing that while I was a senior in high school here another part of the world was imposing restrictions akin to the middle ages.
