BCP Blah...

Soooo I usually get my BCP free from my gyno cause my insurance doesn't cover jack and they cost me a fortune!! Well anyways, so I call my doc today to go pick some up and they are out, boooo. I think I'm gonna suck it up and pay for it this month, but now i'm starting to think about maybe getting on the IUD (?) (is this right term?) I mean i would love to not to have to take the pill anymore and then get stuck in situtaions like this.  DO ya'll know of anyone who is on it or do ya'll know any information about it? Thanks!!

Re: BCP Blah...

  • Meg, that was what I was thinking I wanted to do earlier but my dr wouldnt do it for me. Be prepared to shop around, because it is recommended for women who have already had a child. Other than that, I can offer no personal insight.

  • boooooo that sux, well i'm waiting for my dr's office to call me back.  I hope that they will do it for me!! i'm tired of taking pills, and I don't want to do the ring.
  • I also have heard that they only do it for women who have already had a child!  I know a couple of girls who have had children and had IUD's put in.  I've heard nothing but good things about them overall (no daily pills, no baby) BUT I've heard that they are VERY VERY painful to get put in and cause painful cramps at first.  So I too have no personal suggestion or help for ya.. but I thought i'd share my two sense
  • I used to work for a gyno and he did them on everyone, but he was a little strange and just wanted the insurance payment so therefore he was wrong. From my experience I believe they only do them once you have a baby. When I went after I had my daughter they asked if I was planning another child in the next 5 years and I was like um...I dont know. So I opted not to get one, but I believe they are made to last a lot longer, and cost a pretty penny. If your not looking for kids anytime soon I wouldnt see what the problem would be.

  • what about planned parenthood...are you able to get it from there at all if you have a prescription??

  • I have many ideas/opinions/tips on the IUD if you have the time ;)
  • I think it might be best to put out specific questions, because there is a lot to cover (I don't have one but my two BFFs have them and I am considering them so there is pretty much nothing that I have not asked them/not been asked by a patient considering them)...

    1.  No, they are not necessarily for a lady that has already had a kid.  Your uterus has never stretched like that before, so if you have not had a kid you may get some more cramps on insertion, but after the first few days it is okay.  Many docs now will put them in ladies in a monogamous/committed relationship, though not someone going out and getting laid by random dudes b/c it can slightly increase the risk of STDs that reach the uterus/fallopian tubes and cause PID (which leads to infertility in many cases).

    2.  You can get the metal IUD (which can give heavier, crampier periods but lasts 10 yrs) or the one with hormones on it (many ladies do not get a period at all, lasts 5yrs - the Mirena on TV commercials).

    3.  I have heard that it hurts going in (any one who has had an endometrial biopsy, I think this is the same kind of pain that they call a "small labor cramp" but is really more than a small cramp) but my friends who have had it say that Percocet or 800mg ibuprofren helped immensely.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I will def answer them!  I am also thinking of getting one b/c next year with call I think it will be hard to take the pill on a regular schedule and I don't want to get knocked up b/c I am irresponsible ;)

  • Thank you girls for the input and Renea YOU ROCK!!!!  I'm hoping I find out from my doctors office today some more information (i.e. how much our insurance will cover, if my doctor approves it for me, etc) I'm really hoping that this will work out.  From the people here at work that I"ve talked to they loved it!! My mom even had one after she had me and she reallly liked it.  I talked to DH too and he thinks it would be super great.  We aren't wanting kids for several years and I think this is just the #1 best option for us and our situation.  Thank you soo much ladies and I'll let you know what happens!!!

Renea, this may be a silly question but would getting the IUD which I'm assuming does not have any hormones that release from it or anything, would that affect my hormone levels at all? My Ob/gyn diagnosed me with PCOD several years ago and that was one of the reasons she put me on BCP to control my hormone levels ( i had a higher amount of estrogen than what I was supposed too).  I'm just wondering if this might be a reason she might not put me on an IUD.  What do you think?

  • Hmmm, that is an interesting question to bring up.  I really don't know the answer because it never came up during my rotation.  I don't see why it would be a reason why they could not give you an IUD, because you could always try another drug (like metformin) for the PCOD if you still require treatment.  Def ask your Gyn this one though, but let me know the answer!  I'm interested to hear what she has to say :)
  • I will definitely let you know!!! Thank you soo much!!
  • keep us updated on everything :)
