I need cheap travel ideas
DH and I want to take a little vacay this summer. We had tossed around the idea of Orlando, but I think we're starting to change our mind on that. So we're back to square one and we don't really have any ideas on where to go!! We're totally up for driving/flying/camping/hoteling it. Anything goes.
We're looking at a week max and don't really want to spend more than $2k total. I know that's really pushing the limits, but we're down with packing lunches and eating cheap, especially if we camp. Thing is, I have no idea where to go! We're not big on nightlife, so that doesn't really matter to us. We want to be able to have stuff to do during the day, especially outdoors stuff. We're up for beachy ideas/mountain ideas/whatever. Places to go, things to see, etc. Ad I'd prefer somewhere at least a day's drive away so we actually feel like we're "away". I'm being super picky, but at the same time, totally open to anything. Weirdo combo.
Sooooo, any suggestions? Does anyone know of any great travel websites, other than the typical ones (travelocity, kayak, etc)? I just need some ideas.

Check out funjet, they have a bunch of hypercheap caribbean deals from DFW.
We did Hot Springs, AR for our honeymoon because we literally had no money. We flew SW, stayed at a chain hotel on Lake Hamilton, and went hiking, did watersports, and did a day at the historic spas and stuff. It was fun!
do you two have passports? We did over a week in Belize for our honeymoon and it came it at just over $2k, that included flights. I say "just over" because we probably spent much more on booze than you might, and we did scuba and a bunch tours/hikes/sightseeing stuff
Summer is the cheap time to stay there, too.
Japan- it's more than a day drive and there is tons of outdorr stuff to do here!
Ok, just kidding- it would cost way more than $2K and you need a week to adjust to the jet lag! I would second Belize as a great vaca spot- TONS to do outdoors (beachy or jungly type things, or both), and it isn't all that expensive to get there and stay.
In the US, I'd say Santa Fe, NM; Colorado; San Fran; New York (not as outdoorsy, but I've always wanted to go there); Hilton Head, NC; Branson, MO; Little Rock, Ark; Wyoming- those are just some suggestions of places I've either been and liked, or really want to go to someday.?
I'm also going to recommend Colorado. Some friends of mine went last year for their summer vacation and the pics are absolutely gorgeous. I never realized Colorado was such a great summer destination too.
Check out condos and cabins. It's been years and I don't know prices, but when I was a teenager, we rented a cabin that was on a lake. All the cabins were pretty secluded from each other, so you really felt like you were away. I've looked in the last couple of years and the prices are not bad for cabins.
And then you could definitely do your own food. Plenty of outdoor stuff. Pick a location that would be an easy drive to get to other areas of interest like Pike's Peak, Garden of the Gods, Denver. Personally, I recommend the Colorado Springs area as that is one place I would move in a heartbeat, it's so nice.
