Taking Dinner after a Baby Comes

I'm signed up to bring dinner to a friend who recently had a baby.  I'm looking at the sign up sheet and a lot of people are bringing a chicken dish/casserole/etc.

Any ideas for something non-chicken that I can make ahead and heat that day?

TIA!

Re: Taking Dinner after a Baby Comes

  • Enchilada's

    Meat Loaf

    Tortilla Soup

  • Two things that I've done that are a little different than the standard are chili or bbq pulled pork sandwiches. Easy to bring the meat or chili and fixin's separate.

I've also brought a couple something like Chili's to go or something and they seemed to really appreciate it!

  • I personally get tired of casseroles after a while, although I know they are easy.  My sister recently did a pot roast in the crock pot for a friend and just took the whole thing over there with a salad and rolls, very easy.  Like Carla said, I'd probably try to do something outside the box like pulled pork sammies, pot roast, etc.  You're a great friend to do this!
  • That's an awesome thing to do for your friend! I didn't have anyone make us or bring us food when I had Hudson, however Jess & Marc did bring us several Dinner Station meals after my m/c in January and it seriously was SO helpful and appreciated. So, that would be another suggestion if perhaps you didn't want or have time to fully prepare a home-cooked meal per se. It definitely made it easier for us the first week or so once I got home from the hospital because it kept David from having to cook so much and was just one less thing for us to worry about during that time.
  • Pot Roast

    Beef Fajitas

A basket of sandwich fixin's, soup-at-hand, oatmeal cups, etc...  I got something liek this with Kai and it was perfect because it was all food easy to assemble on my own after dh had returned to work.

  • I've never done pulled pork sandwiches so that intimidates me!  :-)

I could do a pot roast though.  And then just do potatoes, carrots, & onions with it? (and a salad?!)

I have a great recipe for enchiladas (similar to KMT's green enchiladas).  would that be a disappointment to not have meat?

  • oh yeah... I have a great recipe for a breakfast egg casserole.  Should I make this too and just include a card for how to cook it?
  • We had ppl bring lasagna, brisket with buns and sides and pot roast. MIL also made some seafood gumbo with rice while she was here.

  • Charity you will not believe how easy the pulled pork is if you ever decide you're in the mood for it.

Buy a pork roast (butt is fattier and therefore juicier - but I prefer a loin or even tenderloin because it doesn't have all the fat on it. And it doesn't get dry anyway). Put it in the crockpot. Cover with 1 bottle of bbq sauce, fill the bottle up with water, pour it in. Throw in some sliced onions. Cook all day.

At the end of the day, shred with forks (it will fall apart) and mix with more bbq sauce. Ta da! :)

Or the famous one on WC:  Root Beer Pulled Pork: Crockpot, root beer, pork loin, cook all day, shred, mix w/ BBQ, heat til warm again.

There's a great website that you can use to sign up for meals - after a baby is born, cancer, surgery, etc.  So a friend sent an email out and asked who was interested in making a meal.

I might create one for me and just send the link out to friends.  Smile  Perhaps the disease of not having time to cook?

I was thinking a good breakfast casserole or quiche would be good with fresh fruit.

  • Just a suggestion... fruit.  A friend brought us over a basket with apples and muffins in it, and I LOVED it!  The fruit came in handy when I was hungry, but not ready for a meal.

Regarding meat, if your friend is breastfeeding she will need the extra calories/protein.  That is, unless you are a vegetarian and you don't do meat.

  • Ahh thanks, Chair... sorry I had nothing to add... if it hadn't been for thenest, I would have never of known people brought food to someone who just had a baby!

  • If Mom is breastfeeding, I would be careful with really spicy Mexican foods (red sauces on enchiladas, tortilla soup, anything with lots of onions or peppers).  Those can upset baby's tummy (or Mom's!) -- or maybe I just have really picky friends.  :)

All of our sign up sheets at church specifically ask for non-spicy foods though so maybe there's something to it!

  • Love care calendar! I usually make king ranch, lasagna, or a pork tenderloin. Lately life has been so crazy that I have been picking up the Central Market's meal for 2. We have been taking at least two meals a week the last month and that has been helpful. Two people got a fish meal one week, salmon, I think. They both said they loved it, as it was fresh and different from what they had been receiving.

When I single, I used to call and ask what kind of pizza they liked. Then I had pizza delivered and paid by credit card over the phone. This was easy because sometimes delivering the meal is harder than making the meal. ?

Thanks, S.  I had no idea!  I'll keep that in mind.
