New Neighbors

We have some new neighbors in the court and I was going to take some cherry chocolate cupcakes over to them as a welcome to the neighborhood kind of thing

co worker says that she has never seen this done and that I will freak them out - I say she is crazy that I have seen this done my entire life

so - do you take new neighbors something to say hello or just peek at them from behind the blinds??

Re: New Neighbors

  • Our next door neighbors brought us a cheesecake and a card the night we moved in. I thought it was so sweet, and I've loved them since! LOL seriously, it really made a good impression.

  • I think that's super sweet. When we moved into our house in Atlanta, some neighbors brought things over and it made us feel welcome.  Our neighborhood here was new, so only the homebuilder welcomed us here.  I've thought about doing this for new neighbors but haven't thus far b/c I haven't had the time.

I say go for it.  Or, make them and bring them to me instead! :)

  • I think baked goods would be lovely, and I've definitely seen that done.  I'm one of those people who is very discriminating when it comes to eating other people's homemade goods though, in that I usually don't especially if I don't know the peson well enough to know if they've got 7 cats climbing on their kitchen counters, or what ingredients were used, but that's just me.  We usually will walk over a bottle of wine, or happen to see them outside and let them know we've got a margarita machine, that's how we've met most of our neighbors.
  • I think that would be super sweet of you!

Our neighborhood association "Welcome Wagon" paid us a surprise visit the other weekend.  I was trapped in the kitchen while DH talked to them because I had been doing sweaty housework all day and looked like hell.  I also wasn't wearing a bra.  Embarrassed  Wouldn't have been the best first impression.

"Would you be mine, oh could you be mine, won't you be my neighbor"

    Please! Stick out tongue

  • I think it's a fantastic idea.  It's nice to finally be in a neighborhood (as opposed to an apartment, where I really don't WANT to know the neighbors) and meet the people nearby.  I agree with the wine, or something pre-packaged, though.
  • That would be super sweet of you! We still haven't met some of our neighbors after being here a year and a half. And we've even tried to invite them over for gtg's and stuff... I wish you lived next to me!! :)

  • I've always wanted to do this... but never have.  : /  And hey, I will not turn down any baked goods!

As for the bottle of wine... not everyone drinks (like my neighbors).... so that can be a little risky, too.

  • I considered doing something similar for our neighbors, but I decided against it.  Since it's a new neighborhood, all of us were new so it just felt kind of weird.

    I know!!

I need to tell J that we need to move - I think I will tell him that I need to be closer to all the shopping

  • When I was younger, we were one of the first houses in the neighborhood. Slowly as people moved in, I remember taking cakes/cookies/brownies  as well as a list of local resources (utility info/ plumbers / locksmith/ handymen/ baby and pet sitters/list of stores nearby) to all of the new neighbors....our other neighbors did this too...

9 times out of 10 everyone seemed to enjoy being welcomed and it was much easier to get to know them that way. We only had it backfire one time ...they gave us a nasty look and told us they didn't want out cake and then closed the door... needless to say, we never became friends with them.

  • I think it's great!  If they are weirded out, then they'll toss them, but still appreciate the nice gesture.  :)

And I so wish this happened in my neighborhood... we still don't know anyone's names!  (I know, I should start it!)

  • Do it!  Our neighbors brought us cookies when we moved in.  When they moved we greeted the new neighbors with cookies.  We also had a open house when we moved in and I knocked on all the neighbors doors to invite them so I forced myself on them  Big Smile

  • Do it! That's super sweet of you! If they are weirded out by baked goods, they will toss them, but you'll never know anyway- it was the thought that counts.?

I was impressed when we moved in here on base that our neighbors came over and said hi- and brought us a bottle os sake (hey, it is Japan afterall!) I couldn't enjoy it, but DH sure did!

  • Well, we really haven't had any one new move into our neighborhood but when I was growing up we always did this - people did it for us when we moved in too.  We lived in a smaller town though - but it was great and created some lifelong friendships that lasted after people moved away.

  • If it's just homemade baked goods that freak people out, you could always get something pre-packaged. Like some of the Lacies cookies from Whole Foods or somethign like that.

    I personally think it's nice!

  • I think it would be great.  Our neighbor welcomed us the night we bought our house by calling the police!  We had parked our cars there and gone to eat dinner and came back and there were like 4 cops outside with flashlights, etc.  We were like um.....

When we met him he apologized and said he called because he thought the house was supposed to be empty lol

Didn't bother us, nice to know he is keeping an eye out, and he and my husband drink beer together all the time now.
