Suggestions for car insurance company?

Morning!

It's that time again where our car insurance is up for renewal, and I think I want to shop around a little bit this year to see if we can get a better rate.  We have always been with State Farm, and while I like their service, I don't think that it's significantly better than we could get elsewhere.  We have our auto, renter's and personal lines (jewelry) with them.  Since we live in the DC area, I don't really need suggestions for specific agents, but I was hoping to get feedback regarding your insurance company (service, rates, etc).

TIA!

Re: Suggestions for car insurance company?

  • I have always been pleased with Erin Insurance.  I have never shopped around, so I'm not sure if I'm getting the best deal or not.  We have our car and home owners with them.
  • I have Progressive, they are the only company I've ever used. I really happy with them so far. DH just switched to them so we can share a policy and I think their rates are really reasonable. Also any time I call in they are so nice on the phone.
  • We have Progressive and I really like it.  I've been with them since 2002 and added my DH in 2007 after we got married.  I've never had any complaints about them.  I think the rates are pretty reasonable. We pay about $850 every six months for two cars. Our cars are both older with high mileage, so that probably makes a difference, although DH has a couple of blips on his driving record, so it probably evens out.  Our homeowners insurance is with another company.

As for service, I've been more than pleased with them.  I was in an accident last summer and they were great about everything. It probably helped that it wasn't my fault and the other girl's insurace paid, but they were still really nice and helpful before they knew that.  The only other time I had to call them for anything was probably about this time last year. There was a pretty significant rate increase and I wanted to know why.  I called to ask and they said that they had raised rates for everyone. The two people I spoke to ended up bending over backwards to find me additional discounts and I ended up paying less than I was before the rate increase. I thought that was pretty cool :)

  • We have Erie, although I'm not sure if they extend into the DC market.  Maybe they do, and I'm just assuming they're PA-focused because they're based in PA.

Anyway, I shopped around after DH and I got married, since we wanted to combine our separate policies for two cars (Progressive & State Farm), homeowners and valuables.  State Farm was competitive, but Erie won out with their multiple-policy and multiple-auto discounts.

Not sure that our rates will help you much since you're in a different market, but we pay  $1,000 a year for two cars we own: a 2001 Mitsubishi and a 2002 Saturn.  And I think we carry the "standard" deductible ($100/$500) and liabilities ($100,000/$300,000).

  • We currently have Kemper insurance (affiliate of Unitrin).  After doing a bunch of shopping around for agencies we found they offered us the best rates for our combined policies.

Before we owned our house, we had Mutual Benefit.  For us, they offered far and away the best rates we could find for car insurance.

  • We're with Erie...they offered me the lowest rates for our multi-policy and I like the people in the office.

I had a claim last summer (my car was broken into) and the entire claims process was fast, effective, and easy.

  • In Maryland and in PA, we have used Erie Insurance and have been very happy with them.  My parents used them for a long time and I have been using them now for several years.  We have all of home owners, car, and other policies through them.  They have been great to work with and were very competitive when we looked at other companies and we saved money when DH switched to them when we got married.
