So, I really, really, REALLY want a mini weinerdog. I've always wanted one, but always held off because I thought it would be a better idea to wait and have kids, and then get the dog when the kids were old enough where it wouldn't be as troublesome. But now, given the fact that I might not even HAVE kids, it seems like a silly reason to wait.
I can't get a dog right this minute, because I need to make sure our house would be clean and puppy-proofed, and my schedule also doesn't permit a dog at the moment. But I'm getting closer...
I CAN'T stop thinking about it! I'm driving my husband nuts with it. (Which is why I thought I'd post about it here for now, instead...) But, I'm starting to get things in order... getting a book to read up on certain things, assessing my costs, and gonna start putting the house in order, top to bottom. Maybe I'll be able to get a Christmas puppy, or maybe a bit sooner with my birthday in September. It would be a nice gift to myself...
Re: I've got puppy fever!
I found our dog on petfinder.com She's a part daschund/min pin, all princess.
SUPER cute and adorable. Dogs are great, but yea, they are a lot of work.
Oh, and LuckyYoungBride and ModernBrideOC both volunteer at shelters, so they may be able to help you find a dog when you're ready.
There were at least 10+ daschund puppies up for adoption over the weekend at the Pet Expo... you probably would have a harder time finding a purebred in a rescue but they are out there & mixes are plentiful (not only that but you'll be doing a good deed through a rescue, getting a tax deduction, and your little one will already be spayed/neutered).
The kids & dogs arguement seems (to me) really silly. We have three, we'll be fostering puppies up until my due date with german shepherd rescue (again), and we may continue post-baby, depending on how things work out.

I have a mini dachshund!
A word of advice, these effers are smart, and very high maintenance compared to other breeds. Be aware that when you rescue, you may end up with lots of medical bills. My family has rescued several dachshunds over the years and while all of them were thankful and part of our family, we spent quite a bit of money on their health issues. The breed itself is very prone to allergies, back problems, obesity, and blindness when white is present on their coat.
I've had purebreds and mixed, adopted and showdogs and I'll say that the mixed rescued ones have been the least trouble!
This. I have a mix (mom was a purebred show cocker spaniel, the owners let her in the backyard to potty and the neighbors dasch dug under the fence and knocked her up) and he was allergic to most normal dog foods for the first five years of his life, he was on an entirely complicated raw diet until he built up an immunity. And they're destructive. A friend's dasch dug out & ate half of their sprinkler system in their backyard when left out while they went to church. $1500 later in surgery, they were able to retrieve a piece of plastic plumbing that became lodged in his stomach.

Hi! Im late but...
We have a mini longhaired weiner that we got from the OC Dauchshund Paws rescue through petfinder.com! They were great to work with, we went to meet them in Riverside at a Pet Adoption Day at a Petsmart and found our Shaun!

The longhairs are supposed to be super chill and Shaun really is such a hippie. He is probably off in a corner writing a poem right now in fact so if you want a less yippy one and more of a emo-dog, check out the longhairs!!
