Re: I GOT APPROVED!!!

  • Rock on!  From experience (my BFF's, not mine) here is a suggestion:

Take something STRONG beforehand for pain (Percocet, etc if you have it left from another Rx) or 800mg ibuprofen about 30 min - 1 hour before your appointment.  I have heard that it is uncomfortable, and that you can have some uterine contractions (mostly for ladies who have not had kids before cause  their uterus has never been stretched before).

    Good luck!!!

  • Very cool!!!!  So how long do you have to keep it in???  Let us know how it goes :)

  • Oh, and there was no problem with the PCOS and IUD evidently?  That is good to know...
  • I didn't talkt o my doctor directly it was just relayed through her nurse, so apparently it was not a problem.  I will ask more questions prior to the procedure.  I'll definitely see if I can get my hands on some pain medication, if not, I may be using tylenol or something :) I'm a baby with pain pills, they make me nauseous.
  • megan - i talked to my friend who is a nurse..her co-worker has it and hates it :(  I guess one of the side effects is more painful periods and an increase in your period flow up to 75%...i had no idea!!!  did they say how long the procedure would take??? I have so many questions! lol

  • That's great, Meg!  Will be nice to be protected, under insurance AND not have to worry about pills any longer. Hope your doc answers all your questions and gives you the green light.

  • There are two kinds of IUDs:  the Mirena (has a hormone on it - it's the one with all the commercials on TV) and then a metal one.  The metal one can cause more cramping and heavier periods, but it is less expensive and lasts for 10 years (Carrie, I bet this is what your friend has).  The Mirena has hormones on it and most ladies get no periods or super light ones, but it is more expensive and lasts for only 5 years.
  • Oh also along the lines of what Carrie said, I did have a friend tell me that she had some cramping for awhile after she got her IUD in, while the other didn't have much in the way of problems after the initial insertion.  So, it seems to be really person-dependent and not something that you can guarantee you will or will not have.

And I would take some ibuprofen not tylenol before because the kind of medication that it is would be better for the cramping.  Just IMHO, that is ;)

So Meg, when are you going to get it put in?

  • Whoops, the answer was in the OP :)  (that's where reading gets me)
  • Meg - I hope everything goes really well. You'll have to let us know how you like it once you have the procedure done. I would LOVE to be done with pills, but I don't have many side effects so I'm a bit scared to switch to something else.

  • Thank you ladies!! Carrie that is a good question.  I need to write all these down and ask the doc!  Also, i wonder how long after you get it, can you have sex?? hehe  OH and I am getting Mirena, so hopefully I won't have the bad cramping and stuff and horrible periods, cause that would SUCK!!

If ya'll have any questions about it that you want me to ask my doc, feel free to tell me and i'll make notes to ask her when I go next Friday!! I"m soooo soo excited!!! :)

  • Meg are you getting Mirena? Do you plan on having kids? Or just waitng a while to have kids?

  • Nevermind I see the Mirena. That is awesom that you got approved, they usually don't give it to women who don't have kids just yet.

    coolio!

How long do you wanna keep it?

  • Bootsy, I'll keep it for either 3-4 years. We aren't in a hurry to have kids and just want to enjoy each other and save up to have kids and get a house.  Sooo basically, we have a lot we want to do first before having any little ones come along and this is just going to be the best solution I feel for us.  Yeah i'm glad and surprised to that I got approved to get it, but I guess my doc is different from most maybe? I dunno :)
  • Sounds like a good option for you, hope you like it!

I am probably the only one here who likes the pill.  For me its easy and only positive side effects.

  • Well congrats on the IUD!....it has never really appealed to me. and to PP Shell, Nope, i love BC...every thing else just worries  me. I've had good luck w/ BC for the most part so i'll stick it out, takin the pill doesn't bother me at all =)

  • I too like the Pill, I would be freaked out by not having a period every month (like many ladies do on Mirena) because it's like my barometer to know that I'm not knocked up.

And Meg, just btw, I think you can do it right there on the exam table after they've put it in if you like ;) (though your doc might not appreciate that, lol)
