Should I or shouldn't I??? (long)

I have a dilemma (a very small one but, still...).

So, most of you know that I am a part-time photographer.  It's more of a passion than a profession but, I certainly do shoots for money as a side job (mainly maternity, newborn and family portraits).  Certain friends and family love to take advantage of my skills and I, being a sucker, often cave in and do photos for them for free. It helps my portfolio but, I'm always left kicking myself for those "lost" hours of time.

Still, I hate being without my camera.  It's like another appendage for me.

SO....tomorrow, I'm attending a friend's baby shower.  No one has asked me to take any photos but, I'm compelled to bring my camera in case there are good photo ops (she's my BF from HS and there will likely be other old friends there).  However, I don't want to get sucked into a situation where I become "the one" taking photos of the event, don't get to enjoy myself and then, need to spend hours post-processing and burning CD's for people.

Any suggestions???

  • Well do you want people to come up to you all day asking to take pics of them or do you want to relax a bit.

Or maybe you can bring it and if you dont feel like it when you get there then say you left it at home.

Id just keep the camera at home and enjoy yourself.

  • Jen, what I would do is take your camera, take some pics (it doesn't have to be constantly or anything and not of every gift either). If anyone asks for pictures I would say that you are giving them to your friend and maybe give her the cd too with the photos too and then they can go make copies of the cd if they want?? is that rude? But thats less time for you. If no one has asked you to take pictures or be the only photog, i wouldn't go there expecting to be it.  I'm sure there will be other people there taking pics, I mean I would hope so!!!
  • Since I'm sure you would like to get some photos I would just take your camera and take some.  You can just give a CD to the one friend and if the others want copies they could go through her?   Remember that the more people you show your work to is a good thing becuase it could lead to potential paying clients.
  • at my wedding shower DH was videoing, and MIL was taking pics of every gift (it got really old really fast) and some others took pics of a few things.?

I honestly never thought to bring a camera to the only other wedding shower I was ever at (it was DH's cousin who I had only met once before).

    ?

As far as baby showers, if the new mom wants pics of the gifts, she should talk to someone ahead of time. I'm sure her mom/mil and other close friends and family will be taking pics.

    ?

Just go and enjoy yourself. Bring the camera to take pictures of cute gift ideas and game ideas, and maybe a few pics of your friends, but dont go with photography being the number one thing you have in mind. go with the goal to have fun.

Don't let people sucker you into "hey jen can you take a pic of this"

tell them you're short on film (or your memory card is almost full).?

  • It's a surprise shower so, my friend couldn't ask me directly.

Well...I guess I'm just going to take it for my own purposes. You're right though, I'm not going to agree to any CD's at all but, will send one to the mom-to-be whenever I get around to proofing whatever shots I do get.

Thanks.  I don't know why I'm being so wishy-washy today.  Maybe because I really want to be OUTSIDE in this gorgeous weather instead of sitting at my desk?!?!

  • lol i always want to be anywhere but here at work Jen, that may be the reason, but I wouldn't say your being wishy-washy!! Go have fun and if you do take some pics, don't forget to post them!! I love your pictures!!! :)
  • Aww...thanks Meg!  Well, all of that was for nothing anyway.  I had decided to take it and, then, was rushed out of the house and forgot to bring it with me!  Oh well.  The party was a surprise and my friend hadn't even showered or put on make-up that morning (I would have murdered someone!) so, she didn't want pics taken at all!!!
