School districts that hire "interns"

Hi girls... Do any of you work for, or know, school districts that hire "interns" vs "student teachers"?

The difference, as far as I know, is that interns are paid as part of the school admin staff, and really "are" the teacher, but work under supervision.... and work for the whole year --

Any ideas?  Specifically I'm looking for a district looking to hire in 8-12 Social Studies.

Thanks!

Re: School districts that hire "interns"

  • Because Social Studies is not designated a "high need" area, it will be a bit more difficult to find a position. Many districts are experiencing major cut backs, and many haven't posted many positions yet. This has to do with what the legislator is doing in terms of funds allocation/the economy/ etc. I cannot name districts that will or will not hire an intern, but as a general rule they hire standard certified first. You will probably have to look indistricts that may not be some people's first choice- i.e. Dallas ISD. My DH did alternative certification, and didn't find a job till RIGHT before the school year started. You have to be EXTRA persistent, and meet as many people face to face as possible (job fairs, etc.).

Although my district doesn't have intern type positions, we have no openings for any position in the 2009-2010 school year.  Positions will be cut through natural attrition and all openings will be filled through forced transfers within the district.  It's doubtful that we'll even receive pay raises for this upcoming school year.

  • Just FYI to pp, I'm pretty sure the person Kris is asking for will be a fully certified teacher when he finishes school.

In order to do that, he has either student teach or do an internship, one being paying and one being unpaid :) Different districts do it differently.

  • Carla is right.... I probably wasn't 100% clear.  I blame lack of sleep Big Smile
  • OOOOO. That makes some difference, although I fear that if he goes for the paid internship he will still be treated like the altern. certs. I did my ST full time for one semester, and that made a lot of in roads for me.
