Homeowners insurance recs? Help!
Who do you have/who have you had for homeowners insurance? Who do you recommend? Who do advise against?
Re: Homeowners insurance recs? Help!
We use State Farm. We used to have our renters insurance through them and we also have our car insurance through them, so we get a discount. Have not had to file a claim for the house, so I don't know how easy they are to deal with in that aspect.
We also got quotes from Farmers, but State Farm had a better price taking into account our discounts and the level of coverage we wanted.
Thanks to all who responded so far!
Here is my dilemma:
We have renters, cars, and jewelry with State Farm - but they are about $400-1000/yr more than everyone else for homeowners! And we are supposed to close on our first home on Thursday (yikes!) and we need to decide on who to take for homeowners by COB! We were assuming we would go with State Farm but the mortgage company saw our quote from them and called us to tell us to shop around, that it was way to high. So we did and sure enough - they are significantly more. Now I don't know what to do.
Those of you who have SF for homeowners, do you feel like you are paying an arm and a leg? If you don't mind telling me how much you pay, that would be awesome too, although I know it varies based on a # of different factors.
I don't know how much ours is off the top of my head, but like I said, we also got a quote from Farmers, who I heard typically has lower rates, and it was comparable to what State Farm was quoting us. State Farm was actually a little less after our discounts, so that surprises me that your quote is so much higher. Then again, I think insurance is such a case-by-case thing. Have you gotten a quote from Farmers? Another thing to keep in mind since you're stressed about the time crunch - you can always switch policies or companies later on when you have more time to mull over the details.
We currently have State Farm but are changing that as of 6/13/09. We are paying double what we could get elsewhere. I had my car insured with them and even with that discount it wasn't worth it. I just switched my car insurance to Geico, and with better coverage, I'm saving $330/year.
I had some of the best rates you could get at State Farm because I had been with them over 10 years. They have great customer service but their rates were higher than almost everyone else's.
Gippers - that is a very good point - thank you.
To all who have responded - thanks so much!
I think for right now we are going to do State Farm since we are in such a crunch and everything else we have is with them - and then do further research once things are calmer and see if we want to switch.
I am going with Germania. I have them on my current house and using them for my new one (closing on Thursday). $1300 on a > $400K house
They were by far cheaper than Allstate, Farmers, and USAA. Email me and I can get you their information.
We have Allstate for homeowners, life, and auto. I've always had exceptional service from them and their rates are awesome (for us anyway). I'd highly recommend them.
anyone who can qualify for USAA should totally look into them. They are fabulous. We have EVERYTHING through them.
I rec against State Farm b/c they screwed us pretty bad for a pretty long time.
