Snorkeling? (and hi)

Hello!  I usually post over on The Bump (GP board), but was hoping I could post here and get some local help.

DH and I will be celebrating our 3 year anniversary in a few weeks.  I was thinking we could do some kind of fun activity to celebrate.  I have never been snorkeling before, and thought that might be something we would enjoy.

So, have any of you been snorkeling in the LA/OC areas before?  If so, any recs?  Are there places you can go that you can rent all the things you need?  Or are there like guides that will take you out and show you around?

Sorry if my questions are stupid, as I have no clue where to start looking.  Thanks in advance!

  • There are some popular areas for diving in Laguna Beach. I have been snorkeling a few times in CDM/Laguna, but it's not particularly great. Perhaps you want to consider kayaking? There are places to rent kayaks in Huntington Harbor/Newport Harbor/Dana Point.

Hmmm, I never thought about kayaking.  That sounds like it could be fun, too.  I guess snorkeling would still be my first choice, but if there aren't any good recs for snorkeling, I will look into kayaking.

Do you have any specific places you would recommend for kayak rentals?

  • there are a few places for kayak rentals in sunset beach on PCH.  I don't remember names but it's on the non-beach side, pretty easy to find.  I've gone kayaking in the harbor around there, it's pretty fun.

no clue about snorkeling, maybe plan a day trip to catalina?

ETA:  I found it, my friends and I used sunset kayak rentals:

Oh, I didn't think about that.  I think kayaking sounds good, lol.

    Thanks for all the advice.

  • I went snorkeling on Catalina years ago in May.  It was very cold but the place where we rented our equipment also gave us wetsuits which really seemed to help.  I remember it being decent but not great.  I personally will only go snorkeling when I am in a nice tropical location with warm water.
