Re: so....are you guys concerned yet??

  • Ehh...the flu season is ending so cases will go down.  By the time flu season comes around again they'll have a specific vaccine for it.

I saw the story about the little kid in TX.  It's really a shame, but some people are more suceptible to the virus than other people.

  • Not concerned yet.  The world is a crazy place and I refuse to live in a bubble.
  • yes, babies are very suseptible...and babies are taken care of by adults. ?So if you catch swine, why would you not be concerned about passing it to a baby?

and if flu season is even relevant, than why are swine cases going up and not down?

  • Shari, the best thing to do is take precautions, but don't be paranoid. I know you are concerned because you have a young baby, but it's best to just be cautious and vigilant. It sounds like you're really getting upset and nervous. You can, literally, make yourself sick with high stress levels so, please, just take comfort in the fact that you, your baby, and family are safe and healthy.
  • You have every right to be concerned and if I had a newborn or any children at all I would probably be worried too.  However, swine flu = avian bird flu = mad cow disease = ecoli from strawberries and spinach = salmonella from sprouts and peanut butter = an endless list of deadly medical complications from things that I cannot control.  This is not saying that I don't pay attention to the news and that I don't try to take necessary precautions.  However in the meantime I try not to panic or worry about these issues.  Are they concerning?  Yes of course.  Can I control them?  No of course not.  I can only control my actions.  I probably won't go to Mexico City and probably won't eat alfalfa sprouts right (they are the latest salmonella link).  I am also crazy though and believe that most of this is government induced hysteria.

I am not overly concerned...yet.  On my way to the train, they had a Dr on the radio and he was saying that we should all be cautious about washing hands, coughing into a tissue, etc.  but not panic.  He said that with outbreaks like this, it is normal for the  # of cases will gradually go up but will eventually go back down and unfortunately there will probably be deaths.

I think we all need to be cautious, but at this point, there is not a need to panic.  The media builds this stuff up and freaks people out.

  • Well said, Anna! It's not that I'm not concerned, I am.  It's just that I refuse to hide out because I 'might' get something.  If anything, I'll get the swine flu tonight at the concert, but I'm still going!
  • I think its right to be concerned and take the right steps to prevent this from happening (wash hands etc).  That being said my husband read an article about this yesterday.  He said thousands of people have died from "the flu" this past year and 150 have died from swine flu.  I understand you have a child therefore you have different interests then most of us do with regards to this situation but there really isn't anything you can do to prevent everything in life.  As a pp said, you can add this to the list of things that can make us sick in the world.  I think the majority of people that get this are very sick for a couple days then get better.
  • I'm not all that concerned. ?I've had my nine month old out everyday this week. ?I don't want to be one of those people who goes crazy trying to keep her family from getting sick. ?I'm not even thinking about it, to tell you the truth.
  • I'm not concerned. I wash my hands and try to avoid sick people.  At the same time I can't not go to work, or the food store, or out in public.  Every year something comes up for us to worry about.  You just need to be cautious.
  • This article has a lot of good info about the fact that if you're going to freak about swine flu, you might want to realize what the regular flu holds for tens of thousands of people every year.
