What is an appropriate tip?

We have a guy remodeling our shower. He doesn't work for the company and is doing all the work himself. What would an appropriate tip be? The cost of the project is around $3000.

Re: What is an appropriate tip?

  • Maybe I am way off here, but if he is doing it all for himself, and making most of the $3k (minus materials cost I assume), I don't know that you have to tip him. I mean, he's basically pocketing all of that if he isn't working for a company. I personally wouldn't tip in a situation like that.
  • I didn't say that right. He DOES work for a company, but he isn't the owner, just the worker bee. I'm not sure how much he is getting of the 3K.

  • I have had a lot of work done in my house by various contractors and I have never tipped.  If you want to do something nice buy him lunch or something one day.

  • I haven't ever tipped for services performed by a worker who was affiliated with a company or someone who is self-employed doing the work themselves.  I figure they are charging for the services to cover materials, costs and employee pay.  I work for a company and I know I do more work than the owner does, maybe I should have a tip jar on my desk...That'd be great!
  • We haven't tipped any of the workers that have come out to our house.  I provided drinks and snacks for some of them, but that's it.
  • OK, I guess I probably won't then. I just assumed you had to tip EVERYONE these days.

  • I agree with previous posters... it's not necessary.

That being said - we also offered contractors food/beverages/snacks etc.  Or if I were going to get breakfast for DH & me...would grab a bagel and coffee also for whoever was there working.

My philosophy is that they would like me better and do better work!  Wink

  • Agree with the others...we just provide drinks.  I've found they usually decline food since they come with their own.
