Chinchilla anyone??

Anyone here ever had/have a chinchilla?? they are soo precious and our duplex manager told DH that we could actually have one since we can't have a dog. So now we may get a chinchilla!!!! Just curious if ya'll ever had one, what your experience was and so forth!!! :)

Re: Chinchilla anyone??

  • oh ehmm geeee, we had chinchillas growing up..they are cute...BUT we had a girl & a boy, and that a sh*T ton of babies, and the mom ate some of them, and then the ones that did survive actually ended up getting sick and my mom had to take them to the vet...then we ended up giving all we had left away. We had them for a few years, and we had lots of them. They are super cute, and super fluffy , we just had bad luck with them I guess.

  • awwwwww i'm in love with them and i can't wait to get one.  I think we are going to get a boy and name him Chilly :)  Did they smell or stink? DH says they are hypoallergenic and they dont smell (i'm thinking of like how sometimes hamsters smell and ferrets smell) but according to him they don't.  I'll keep ya'll updated.  I don't know where the best place to get one would be.  There is an exotic pet place (not your typical pet store) that sells them and I'm wondering if that would be the best place to get one or to locate a breeder/owner. I"m not sure. Research this we will :)
  • I don't remember them stinking. We had a GIGANTIC cage for them. It was about 7 foot tall. It sat on legs, but the cage it self was probably 5 foot tall..it has lots of "levels" in it where they could jump around. they take "baths" in this powder stuff. they are def adorable & cuddly. I don't remember them shedding, but i'm not really sure, i was young. I saw them pretty recently at a pet store locally, just a regular pet store like pet supermarket or something like that.

  • Well we went to two pet stores last night just to see. Totally reconfirms that we definitely want one!!! They are just sooo cute!!! They look like a mix between a rabbit, guinea pig and a big eared rat. We are trying to see if we can adopt one from this rescue or from someone who can't take of their's anymore first before we look into a pet store.  We cannot wait!!! :) And I'll definitely post pics when we get one!!!
  • That is fun! I had a teacher who had one in high school. I remember he would put him in a hamster ball and let him go in the halls...it was great!

  • BKenan, yeah we are totally gonna get one of those big hamster balls. We read that they like to explore places....hehe I would love to come upon a colony of little chinchillas living out in the wild, that would be heaven right there!! What's even cuter? They are from the Andes Mountains!!! hehe I wonder if people call them Mountain rats??
  • We have 2 chinchillas, Kunzite aka "The Chin Man" is a grey male and Aphordite is a white female.  I would suggest getting them as young as you can.  We got Kunzite when he was 8 weeks old.  Since we got him so young he was not as rascally and we were able to get him very tame and VERY sweet.  Aphordite on the other hand is a whole different story.  She is one WILD lady.  From the first day we had her she was extremely skiddish.  We got her when she was 10 or 12 weeks old.  I have tried and tried to calm her down but 2 years later she is still as crazy as ever!

Be careful with letting them run free, they will chew on walls, furniture, purses, anything that they find.  When we moved into our new place they were only allowed to have playtime in a gigantic hamster ball.  Aphrodite loves it, my Chin Man hates it.  They also need to exercise everyday or they will let you know they are not happy.  For being small critters they have very big personalities.  Like Sting said a big cage is best because they like to jump, climb, and play.

They really are great little pets and can give you lots of love.  I would check out pet finder dot com or look for a local breeder.  Good luck finding your chin, you will love them!!

The chinsimage ">I will try to post a PIP but not sure if it will work.

  • You guys will have a lot of fun with him/her.... I didnt know that they had rescues and everything for them. I knew people had them as pets I just didnt know a lot of people had them as pets....def post pics when you get it!

  • How do they get along with other animals?

  • awww here are pauluka's chins!!!

    too cute!!

  • Carrie I"m not sure how they are with other animals. I need to research that as well.

Paluka, we would definitely like to get them as young as possible so that it can bond with us.  thank you soo much for the advice!!!  Do your two get along? Are they fixed?

  • They get along but we cannot leave them alone, if you know what I mean.  They both hump on one another, and as much as I would love baby chins, DH does not.  So they live in separate cages next door to one another.  I was not comfortable having either one of them going under anesthesia so I opted not to have them fixed.

My two are unafraid of anything.  They actually will jump on the cats and scare them.  Even the vaccuum cleaner does not scare them.

Do you have a certain color in mind?

  • I'm not really picky about the color....although the one we saw yesterday was a dark black and gray, just BEAUTIFUL colors.  But I'll take anything really :)  Yeah if we got a boy and girl I would not put them in the same cage together either, I wouldn't want babies everywhere, not that they wouldn't be cute or anything, cause they would, that would just be overload for us I think. That's good to know about the other animals too.  Are they nocturnal??
