Anyone here ever had/have a chinchilla?? they are soo precious and our duplex manager told DH that we could actually have one since we can't have a dog. So now we may get a chinchilla!!!! Just curious if ya'll ever had one, what your experience was and so forth!!!
Re: Chinchilla anyone??
Canon 50D, Canon 50mm f/1.4, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Speedlite 430EX II
We have 2 chinchillas, Kunzite aka "The Chin Man" is a grey male and Aphordite is a white female. I would suggest getting them as young as you can. We got Kunzite when he was 8 weeks old. Since we got him so young he was not as rascally and we were able to get him very tame and VERY sweet. Aphordite on the other hand is a whole different story. She is one WILD lady. From the first day we had her she was extremely skiddish. We got her when she was 10 or 12 weeks old. I have tried and tried to calm her down but 2 years later she is still as crazy as ever!
Be careful with letting them run free, they will chew on walls, furniture, purses, anything that they find. When we moved into our new place they were only allowed to have playtime in a gigantic hamster ball. Aphrodite loves it, my Chin Man hates it. They also need to exercise everyday or they will let you know they are not happy. For being small critters they have very big personalities. Like Sting said a big cage is best because they like to jump, climb, and play.
They really are great little pets and can give you lots of love. I would check out pet finder dot com or look for a local breeder. Good luck finding your chin, you will love them!!
You guys will have a lot of fun with him/her.... I didnt know that they had rescues and everything for them. I knew people had them as pets I just didnt know a lot of people had them as pets....def post pics when you get it!
awww here are pauluka's chins!!!
too cute!!
Carrie I"m not sure how they are with other animals. I need to research that as well.
Paluka, we would definitely like to get them as young as possible so that it can bond with us. thank you soo much for the advice!!! Do your two get along? Are they fixed?
They get along but we cannot leave them alone, if you know what I mean. They both hump on one another, and as much as I would love baby chins, DH does not. So they live in separate cages next door to one another. I was not comfortable having either one of them going under anesthesia so I opted not to have them fixed.
My two are unafraid of anything. They actually will jump on the cats and scare them. Even the vaccuum cleaner does not scare them.
Do you have a certain color in mind?
