HUH??
I love the children's book, The Rainbow Fish (if you don't know the story - a conceited little fish with pretty rainbow scales learns the value of being humble and sharing by giving almost all of his scales away to other fish. In the end, he's no longer as pretty but he shared and now has lots of friends). I have a framed print of the Rainbow Fish in my room at my parents house (yes, my ADULT room) and I always thought it would be a cute theme for a nursery/baby's room.
So, I was googling the Rainbow Fish and checking out all the related decor when I found the wikipedia page:

So are you telling me my little fish isn't just a good sharer, but really a COMMUNIST!? Come on! He's a cartoon fish!!
Re: The Rainbow Fish is a Communist
Hunh. I haven't read that one, but that would depress me as well. We recently bought "the Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, and it depressed me so much! Beautiful tree gives everything to the boy--just made me think the boy was a selfish jerk!
But you know--just because the theme is "giving is good and has its own rewards" doesn't mean it's communist. Just like "the rich should pay more taxes" doesn't make us socialist!!
Wow, I never saw the story in that light.
I thought the message was "Hey kids, share with each other! It is the nice thing to do!"
Why do people feel the need to tear apart simple things and find hidden meanings that they ascribe to them. I wonder what the author thinks of this.
I remember always thinking the Giving Tree was sad!
This book is has a happier vibe about sharing, I think.
Agreed about the sadness in Giving Tree. The book always makes me cry.
Now you know what always makes me sob like a fool? Puff the Magic Dragon. When you get to the end of the song and the little boy grows up and leaves behind Puff I just lose it! I can't even hear the song without tears starting to flow.
Check out the the lyrics:
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.
Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow wheneer they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.
A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee
Now that I'm totally veering off of Rainbow Fish....
I sometimes sing You Are My Sunshine to BabyP, but I only know the chorus. I looked up the lyrics and that is another heartwrencher! Yeesh.
Well, there are theories that Puff the Magic Dragon is about smoking pot. So I guess you can find an alternate meaning to just about anything!
This says it's not true: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puff,_the_Magic_Dragon
