Anyone gone back to school for their bach degree as an adult student?

DH really wants to go finish up his bachelor's. I'm totally for it, but I refuse to take out any more loans so we're relying on paying cash, grants and scholarships. Are there even grants and/or scholarships out there for adult students? He would only be taking 1-2 classes a semester most likely because he has to keep working FT. I have no idea where to start looking.

We're going to contact the school directly and he's going to see if his company does tuition reimbursement (not likely) but other than that, IS there money out there for adults returning part time? I've found several things but they're for FT students only :(

Re: Anyone gone back to school for their bach degree as an adult student?

  • DH is back in school for his bachelor's.  Right now he is still at community college, so we are just paying out of pocket.  He is only working part time.  When he is able to transfer into a university, we'll do loans and grants.

I think you are going to have a hard time finding financial aid for part-time, but looking through his employer (and yours) is a good place to start.  I know my employer offers loans to employees and their spouses, but not reimbursement.  The institution I have my own loans through is EdFinancial and I have had good experiences with them.  Again, not sure if they do loans for PT students but still worth looking into.

If it's been over 5 years since he's been in school, he will probably need to retake some basics, so he may be able to do that at community college which is pretty inexpensive for individual courses.

I'm not sure how demanding his job is, but people do work full time and go to school full time, that's what I did.  It doesn't work for everyone (like my DH!) but it's not impossible!

  • Thanks! I didn't think to check my employer. I'll have to do that. We won't be doing any loans. I'd sooner find a second (and third!) job before doing that. We already are paying on his old loans and I refuse to add to it because I'm paranoid like that! It's such a pain finding stuff for adult PT students. It's like if you're not FT, you're SOL. :(

His job is pretty demanding... He works long days and occasionally has to do stuff on the weekends. I don't think he could do more than 2 classes and keep his (our) sanity. Plus, if we're paying cash, it'd be tough too. Ugh. Money always gets in the way of stuff!

RJ, are we married to the same guy? lol My DH has lots of debt from SL's that we're repaying now, but he didn't graduate. He left with 3 semesters to go. He wants to go back to school, but we're trying to figure out how too! His job is the same as your DH's. Mine will also only be able to take 2 or so classes at a time. Keep me updated w/ what you find out and I'll do the same for you!

  • Laura - You got it!! I'll let you know if I find anything for sure! It sucks, doesn't it?! I want him to go back soooo bad, but the finances just get in the way. There seriously needs to me more grants and stuff for people in our situations. I mean, I know there are probably TONS of adults out there in the same boat as us! As soon as I figure out a way to make my millions, I'm totally setting up a program :)

  • Oh and I'll help you run said program! lol It's kind of depressing how much money is ruining the chances of him actually getting to go back. I want mine to go back as well. I just know it would make him so much happier. I didn't finish either, but luckily I landed a good job. His job is good too, but the skill level is beneath what he is capable of and it bores him.

I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open!...and doing some research! :)

Count me as one of those adults!  And let me know when you set up your program.  Wink  It's depressing how much more expensive tuition is now compared to when I started my bachelor degree.

Girl you aren't kidding... DH is going to go to the same school I graduated from (DBU) and when I looked up tuition rates my jaw about hit the floor. I can't believe how much it's gone up.

  • I'm in school right now.  I can't really give any information on the PT stuff as I am considered full time and I do all my classes online through WGU.  Another nestie mentioned the school and I'm so glad I went with them.  The tution is very affordable.
