Name Change Question

DH and I were married almost 6 months ago and I forgot to change my name with the mortgage company until now.  Well when I called today, they wanted all this information sent to them and a $125 fee to change it!  I couldn't believe that they wanted to charge me a fee to change my name on my mortgage.  The loan is now through bank of america because they bought country wide.  Did anyone else go through this?  If so, did you have to pay to change your name on the loan?  If I didn't change it, would effect me down the line?  My name was legally changed a while back with SSA.  TIA!

Re: Name Change Question

  • To change the name on my mortgage I had to send a copy of our marriage certificate and a copy of our home owner's insurance with my new name on it. There wasn't a fee involved and I just did it 2 months ago.

I don't really think it will affect anything because the loan is still linked to your SSN.  There maybe some extra paperwork to fill out if you were to sell it, but essentially it doesn't matter because you can be identified by both names.

  • Honestly don't waste your time. Leave it with your maiden name and if you ever refi they'll change it then. As long as your still making payments that's all that matters. I wouldn't even waste money doing a new deed for your married name unless you're looking to refi.

  • That's what I thought, but I just wanted to make sure.  Thanks ladies!
  • No way - I wasn't paying that either! I also have Countrywide/BOA.

I actually just refinanced, so my name changed then.

  • When we purchased our home (we made settlement 3 months before) I actually asked this question...how to go about doing it.  The mortgage is in my maden name but there is a clause in the mortgage that if anything happens to me my husband can answer for me (not my parents) or divorce, etc...so I never had to change it.
  • I haven't gotten around to changing it on the mortgage either but most likely won't if it costs that much. But we have something similar to Liz&Carm since we bought before we got married. I think it was "rights of survivorship" or something like that with a word that doesn't sound made up. So if anything happened to either of us, the house automatically fully belongs to the other.
I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
