New Pig flu

DH just called and said there is a confirmed case of swine flu at a Plano middle school. Not sure which one though. I don't know what it means for the school or district though, just thought I would pass that along for anyone in that area.

Re: New Pig flu

  • I can confirm that as of right now, there arent any confirmed cases in Collin County. Now that is based on the official info I have RIGHT NOW...its been changing hourly...In other words, they could be in progress of releasing the info.  Dallas County has 6 confirmed cases.

Also as far as the 1 death in Texas-that case wasnt contracted in Texas.  The child got it in Mexico and was transported here.  If you count that one, as of the state conference call I was on earlier there are 26 total in texas.

  • I jsut saw that Wilson Middle School in plano closed--not sure if its becasue of a confirmed case or a probable case.  Most school are closing on the bases of probable cases-hence the ratio of closed schools to the number of confirmed cases.
  • Personally I think this whole thing has been a total media circus and I am shocked how the media can really affect a society to go into a compelte frenzy.

Let's not forget that the regular flu has killed far more people than this swine flu.

CNN is calling is this the Pandemic of 09, is all that really necessary?

I'm all for taking universal precautions but let's not go overboard. I can't beleive the entire FT Worth ISD closed.

  • You are right, every year the deasonal flu kills over 36,000 people, but the difference now is that the mortality rate is much higher.  There is no immunity to the swine flu as there is with seasonal flu.  Just about everything thats going on is very reasonable-for the most part.  And theres even more preparing going on that the public doesnt see.  Its natural that the public react just as you are-they arent expected to know everything about the issue, and I can even see every reason why people think its over reacting.

I completely agree with you. This whole thing is a reporters wet dream. It just makes people a little on the crazy side. I will continue to avoid sick people, wash my hands and live my life.

  • People are making a big deal out of the H1N1 virus because unlike seasonal flu there is no vaccine currently available to the public. No vaccine means everyone is suspetable to H1N1. Also H1N1 has mutated so quickly. The World Health Organizatio is afriad that it will continue to mutate. Experts also don't know how frequently it causes severe disease or death, because they don't know how many people have actually been exposed to it in Mexico and other places around the world. The reason for the high threat level is becuase the virus jumped continents so quickly. There are now reported cases in Germany. New viruses usually do not spread human to human so quickly.
