H1N1

Is anyone really worried?

We have 15 comfirmed cases in a town 20 minutes from us, they just came back from a senior class trip to Mexico.  Our local HS is closed b/c some of the kids just came back from Disney and showed symptoms.  I'm germ freak as it is, I never leave the house without hand sanitizer and I wash my hands all the time, I clean off the shopping carts with lysol wipes before I put Cate's cart cover on them and we normally take our own seat to restaurants (ETA: Cate's seat, not ours)...I told you I was bad Big Smile - this is also could be why Cate is always sick (this according to my mum).

Part of me is worried for Cate the other part of me says that my worry is a little irational.

Re: H1N1

  • We've got a few probable cases here in Philly that they're waiting for confirmation on.  I'm washing my hands more often, like as soon as I get off public transportation and reach my home/office. But other than that I'm not too worried.  Most cases in the U.S. have been mild, and after examining this virus and what it's composed of, some scientists now believe it's not even as virulent or lethal as the regular flus we see each winter.
  • I'm mildly worried, but truly annoyed.

PEOPLE HERE ARE FREAKING OUT.  We have no confirmed cases, and only 5 suspected cases.  There was something like 280 cases sent for testing... and all but like 10 of them have come back negative (the remaining 10 still have to be tested.)  That's why I'm freaking out.

Maybe I'm not as aware as I should, but I was under the impression it could be treated, just like the regular flu.  I mean, yes, you could die from it... but you can also die from the regular flu.

  • I'm not all that worried. ?As far as I know, there are no confirmed or possible cases anywhere near me right now. ?

This is me to, I'm pretty sure that the regular flu is just as "deadly" - I understand that it's a new strain and that right now there are no vaccinations available for it but common sense goes a long way.  When the local HS closed people here started freaking out.

  • The one thing I'm slightly concerned about is we have to go to Milwaukee this weekend for Uncle Mike's funeral - I have no idea who I'll be in contact with, what they've been exposed to, where they've been, etc.  Mke County has 2 of the 5 suspected cases and it's a much larger city, so I could come across it more.

Of course, I'll just try to be more conscious of hand washing, etc.  It's all I can do.

  • I think the news said that there are 41 suspected cases in the chicagoland area.  I'm not sure if I misheard them because yeterday morning it was only 9 but they closed down a crapload of schools this morning.

I'm not overly concerned about it.  To me, I feel like they are blowing it way out of proportion.  Thousands of people die from the flu each year, I don't know why this one is such a big deal.

I also heard that this strain is lacking an amino acid that would make the spread of it far worse.

  • I'm not worried at all. This H1N1 is just as deadly as the common flu and as long as people practice proper hygiene and people who have flu symptoms stay away from public places I don't think it'll spread that far.

It seems like the news outlets are blowing everything way out of proportion. But this sort of thing happened with the bird flu too.

I'm always washing my hands and doing my best to stay away from sick people anyway!

  • Im doing the normal things like washing my hands all the time and etc. So far i think theres only one case they are examining in minnesota and they did shut that school down. I am not really overly concerned with it. I am more concerned with getting on an enclosed plane in less then two weeks cause im assuming this panic will still be going on. For the same reasons as Paula said, i dont know where they have been or where they are coming from and etc.
  • We apparently have 2 cases confirmed in va somewhere but I'm not worried.  It's like the bird flu all over again.

  • There are so far two confirmed cases in MA, I am alittle worried but I think it's just because it's on the news every two seconds.
