Hi girls, I'm back!
Things have been crazy lately, but I really need your advice. My company is restructuring and I am going to meet my new boss next week in CA, and I'm nervous. I have never worked for someone who is across the country. I want to set up some kind of structure...like a weekly meeting, or ways I can check in, what his expectations are...not to mention the dreaded compensation talk.
Can anyone offer some advice? I really want this to go perfectly. TIA!
Re: anyone work remotely?
Hi-
I know Holly does this full time. My last company had our managers not necessarily working with us. I loved it. I set up a weekly meeting just to discuss any issues and to get to know him. I really liked working that way. I miss it a lot actually.
I can't offer any advice but I would LOVE to work that way!!!
Good luck hope everything works out ok for you.
I worked remotely from home for over a year when we first moved to FL. My company was based out of VA and they flew me back for all company events (if was a fun office!) and I worked at the office for a week every 2-3 months.
The pros were that I got to keep the job I loved and still got to move to FL-we have been wanting to do that for a long time. Your schedule is more flexible and you don't have anyone breathing down your neck. I checked in with my manager multiple times per day - my phone from the office got forwarded to my home office phone so I still answered just like I would have in the office. It's just really important to stay in touch with your co-workers.
Cons: You have to be a self-starter. There are so many other things I would have rather been doing than working some days, so it's important that you stay focus and understand the priviledge you have been given. The biggest con for me was that I moved to a new state/city and knew no one and never left the house. You don't get that human interaction you normally would.
I ended up getting an awesome job here locally and was FINALLY able to get out of the house. Now that I have made friends in the area, I would absolutely work from home in the future if the opportunity presented itself!
Sorry this turned out so long...
