Help pls! maybe moving to your area!
My DH and I are considering moving to the Dallas-FW area next year. He will be completing his residency in emergency medicine in June 2010 but wants to start applying and interviewing this summer/fall. We are interested in living in the suburbs instead of the city. What are some of the local 'burbs you recommend, like, dislike, etc. and why? I desperately need a D-FW for Dummies lesson 
Also, are there are any emergency depts in area hospitals he should consider applying or any he should absolutely avoid?
Any other suggestions or recommendations? TIA!

The suburb part will depend on which side of the metroplex you decide to live in (or where your DH will be working). You probably don't want to live on one side and have him work on the other, that commute would suck.
As for hospitals, I don't know how much experience he wants, but if he is looking for an ER that is always busy and full he might try Parkland. That is one of if not the biggest ER in Dallas. And it tends to get the high level trauma's in the area. Other than that I am no help with hospitals either.
Hi sunnybrook!!!! *waving from Fort Worth* I thought I recognized your name. Had to click on the post to see. I don't know about ERs but could list the hospitals in Fort Worth for him to look at. My BFF is an ICU nurse so I know which has the best ICU.
Texas Health Resource - Harris, Harris Southwest, Arlington. I'm sure if he went to the Texas Health Resource website it would list all of their hospitals in the area.
John Peter Smith - the "county" hospital
Baylor All Saints - downtown and Cityview
I have a medical background, so I can offer a little help.
In Tarrant County:
Harris Methodist- nicer hospital with a fairly busy ER
John Peter Smith- the county hospital, lot of experience with everything
In Dallas County:
Baylor- nicer hospital with awesome technology and lots of satelite offices
Parkland-the county hospital, he will see everything come through...it has one of the highest rated burn units in the country.
Also, it is located close to UT Southwestern ( a teaching hospital), Children's Medical, and Presbyterian which is another good hospital.

This might be too late...but...my DH is in a fellowship right now at Baylor in downtown. He says that Baylor doesn't have an ER residency, so that's one place to eliminate.
He said UT-Southwestern is a good bet because it is VERY busy. Your DH will see it all, so to speak.
Agree with PP - DFW is very spread-out, and I'm sure he'll be exhausted so he'd want to reduce his commute. A good rule of thumb for rush hour is 5 minutes for each mile. So I'd strongly recommend staying about 10 miles from the hospital he chooses. However, balance crime, too (the area immediately around UTSW is not good).
