Swine flu test procedures

Ok I keep hearing that the testing for swine flu and the treatment is not exactly... fun. Anyone know how they are testing for it and treating it and why it is supposedly so uncomfortable?

Re: Swine flu test procedures

  • I have no idea. All I know is that here in Japan there was a sick baby that came in on one of the rotators (the contract flights that land directly on base). They tested it for the A strain of flu, and the baby was positive, so the baby is in quarintine at the base hospital, along with those sitting around the child on the flight, until they find out if the test shows her being + for swine flu. I haven't heard of any cases over here on this side of the world, so I am sure they are all freaking out a bit!
  • A lady I teach with was tested for it.  The test is a nasal swab.  Her test was negative, so I don't know anything about the treatments.  Her test took a really long time to come back.  She was starting to freak out a bit that it was taking so long, but the nurse told her that taking awhile is actually a good thing.  If you're positive the test shows it right away.  A negative result takes awhile.
  • I'm not sure what you are hearing but the test is just a nasal swab and the treatment is a prescription anti viral med used to treat the regular flu.
  • yeah, it's nbd. the test is totally unintrusive, and the treatment is an oral medication.
