iPhone/ iPod Touch

Anyone have either? Likes, dislikes, advice or opinions on the matter would be great :)

I'm due for an upgrade on my at&t contract and have been drooling after the iPhone since it came out. In order to get the service the data plan I'd have to add about another $40 per month to my current bill. That amount isn't totally outrageous, but I hate the idea of having yet another monthly bill.

The Touch seems to do everything I'd want out of the iPhone. Minus the phone and camera aspects. I was thinking of buying the Touch and getting whatever phone came free with the contract renewal. But do I really feel like juggling two devices like that? My purse is already crammed enough!

...insite?

Re: iPhone/ iPod Touch

  • H and I both have iphones. When we got married we got on the family plan, which meant my line was only $10. What we pay now, including both data packages, is the same amount as we did seperatly. The iphone is great. There are so many usefull and fun apps. We check the weather, get our email, listen to the radio, get directions, make dinner reservations, play games. It was a tough desicion to buy them because of the cost but we have never regretted it.

  • I bought my H the iTouch for Christmas, and he LOVES it! He uses it a ton, but I think he'd equally love the iPhone. I think the iPhone is pretty darn awesome, but I wouldn't want the added expense.

However, if I owned the iTouch, I probably wouldn't get as much use out of it. I sit in front of a computer all day, H does not. And honestly, I prefer the radio in the mornings... so I guess it's all about personal taste.

Sorry if this didn't help at all.

  • DH has the iPhone.  I will admit that it is a nice phone, but there is no insurance from at&t.  You can get insurance through an outside vendor though.  DH had his phone stolen 2 months after he got it and had to pay $500 to get another one.  Also, you have to constantly check for updates to the phone.  DH was gets a lot of dropped calls when he doesn't update his phone frequently enough.  It's not a big e-mail phone like the blackberry.
  • I forgot to add that it's kind of annoying to type with!  Maybe I have fat fingers, but I get so annoyed when I'm trying to type something and the next letter always comes up!

  • H and I have been drooling over the iPhone - those damn app commercials! we're like, "ooo...that's cool". We're in contracts with Verizon until 2010 - so no iPhones for us. I'm hoping AT&T doesn't get the renewal with Apple, and they come to Verizon next year!

So anyway - I'd get the iPhone!!

  • H has the iPod Touch (we have Verizon cell phones). For him it was way less expensive to keep his regular cell vs switching and adding $40/month. He really loves it and uses it all the time. It picks up a wireless signal to go online anywhere there is one available.
  • I don't have either, but my girlfriend has the iPod Touch and she loooves it.  All I know of the iPhone is all of the complaining my cousin does about his.
  • Do either of your companies have an AT&T discount?  My H's company does so the data package didn't end up affecting us that much once we got rid of his VCast charge.

My friends and co-workers LOVE their iPhones.

  • Kat - We have an AT&T discount? who knew. I knew we had Verizon and T-Mobile. Good to know if I'm still working there.

So the iPod touch still has all the apps and internet? Just not a phone? Can you do email? I'll have to look into it. Maybe a good gift for H.

  • I don't know about AT&T.  We're on Verizon, I'm just totally unclear when I post :)

  •  Thanks to everyone's input and advice I've decided to go with the Touch. I have no business need right now for a pda type phone, so I'm going to get the cheap upgrade freebie phone. I think we'd get a small discount through my parent company...not enough to make up for the extra monthly bill though.

My purses are usually giant so there is plenty of room to carry both around. And I have a really good point and shoot camera that I prefer to take pictures with anyway.

Toni, you can get apps and the touch has wi-fi web browsing. Not quite as great as the iphone's web cell phone tower browsing, but a decent replacement. http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features/. Also, check to see if your company offers a discount on apple products.

  • Cool thanks Eva. We do get a discount on Apple products - I'll have to see which ones. When we were buying our Mac, the discount was about the same as the student discount.
