Substituting in Central Florida

So I'm currently on the job search but I've heard people say that substituting is a good way to earn money while you're searching for a permanent position because you can choose your hours, etc.

Has anyone ever done this?  Any good or bad advice, experience, etc.?  TIA.

Re: Substituting in Central Florida

  • I've never substituted, but I just got a teaching job in Lake County. Substituting would definately be a good way to get your foot in the door, but some of my friends didn't like it because it was different every day - it's better than not working, though! You could also try tutoring to give you some extra $.

If you need help finding all the contacts online, send me a message - I can help out! Every county should have their vacancies posted online and you should also be able to find contacts for each school/county. I sent emails to every principal, assistant principal, HR, and the special ed department (I'm a special ed teacher) with the hopes of catching someone's eye. I also then called principals to see if they got my resume, if they had any questions and if there were any openings.

Let me know - I'll be glad to help!

  • T: Pragi use to sub as well as Kristen. They liked it - it was a good way to make some extra cash while no cash was coming in! I would def give it a whirl. Go down to the Orange County Education building downtown and you can get everything done.

Ask Prag if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for offering but I'm actually not looking for a teaching position at this moment.  I have thought about it before though.

I actually just wanted to substitute to make extra money while I find the right permanent position in my field.  I think it would be a great way to make extra money and also a good way to see if its something I'd like to do one day.

Thanks again for offering your info.

Yeah I remember Pragi told me about it a while back so I contacted Kelly Services.  So she liked it?  That's good.  I've heard some good stories and horror stories.

    C. Candelario is doing it now while she finds a teaching job.  We'll see.  You know my situation and while I find the right position, I'd like to keep as much flexibility in my schedule as possible.  Thanks girl!

Actually now that you say that, I have a friend who just graduated and is certified to be a teacher and she's looking for a job.  If you could send me any info or advice you have that would be great because she's been substituting until she can get a teaching position and any advice or info would help her a lot.

  • I've never been a substitute, but one of my friends in Orlando still does it once in a while.  All I know from what she's told me is that the schools in Seminole county are better, but they don't pay as well (I think she said around $50/day after taxes).  Consequently she decided to substitute in Orange county instead which pays more, but she doesn't like the schools there as much and apparently some of the students are downright scary (i.e., she was worried about her safety after various fights broke out in her classrooms, etc.).  It quickly changed her mind about wanting to be a teacher, but that was just her experience.  I think she mostly worked at middle schools and high schools.

  • I subbed in lake county this past school year, and it was a great way to get some teaching experience.  Some advice:

    1) If you decide you want to do it, sign up for the training course ASAP.  Each county has their own course, and they usually fill up very fast.  Plus you have to get fingerprinted, drug tested, etc, and that takes awhile.

    2) Especially with the economy the way it is right now, you can expect that jobs will fill up fast.  It might only worth it if you are willing to do middle and high school.  There are always availabilities in those grades!

  • I don't know about the public schools, but I just wanted to suggest that you also put resumes in at the private schools.  Most have their own list of substitutes and don't go thru the same procedures as the public schools when employing them.

  • Ohh Im glad you asked this I was acutally going to post the same thing. I'm still only working 30 hours a week and I wanted to look into substituting on the side. I'll take all the info I can get as well.
  • Many of the subs I know love the area I teach in (Lake Nona, Moss Park). I am a teacher and we are given a list of subs that always sub at our school. I would definitely find a good school near you and sub mostly in one place or two. It would be hard to jump around to new schools everyday!  Also figure out where you would want to sub (elem, middle or high school). I personally am an elementary type of girl. ; )

You have to go through Kelly Services to work in Orange Co. so that's the route you should go. You don't have to accept every job. If a teacher wants you then they can call you specifically to see if you are available. You can get lots of jobs if the teachers like you, the word spreads around! Some subs are at our school almost every day of the week and you really get to know them like the other teachers.

I agree - it's best to pick a few schools you really like.  Soon teachers will start asking for you specifically.  Which county will you be subbing in?
