Sugar/Salt on fruit

MH and I were discussing this last night.

I put salt on my grapefruit.  He says that you should put sugar on it.  I've never put sugar on any type of fruit I don't think.  I also put salt on watermelon.  He puts salt on canteloupe, which to me is gross.

What do you ladies do?

Re: Sugar/Salt on fruit

  • I don't eat salt on anything (well, I don't put extra salt on anything - my mom hates it when I make mashed potatoes because I don't even salt them). ?I don't like the taste of it.

Anyway, I usually eat fruit with nothing on it. ?If I put anything, it's a small bit of sugar.?

  • I have never heard of putting salt on fruit.  MH likes to add sugar to grapefruit and strawberries.  I don't add sugar or salt to any fruit, I don't like the extra calories.
  • I don't put sugar or salt on anything, unless it's already in the recipie.

I like coffee black and fruit/veggies with nothing, not even butter.  I'm a strange bird.

  • Like Mandy I never add any additional salt to anything and would think adding it to fruit would take away the flavor!

But on occasion I will add powdered sugar to cut up strawberries for dessert.

  • Kind of related but not really.  Freshly squeezed lime juice on mangos is the best thing ever!

  • I have never done/heard of salt on fruit

I don't add sugar to anything either, I have never thought to do it but ditto Jen on not wanting to add extra calories

  • I guess I'm the odd one then LOL!

  • I grew up putting salt on cantaloupe.  I've seen people put salt on green apples.  I think there was one other odd combination.  I DEFINITELY grew up with sugar on strawberries and grapefruit.  Now I don't often add either to anything.
  • I grew up with salt on watermelon, but I've never liked it.  If anything, I'll put sugar on grapefruit or strawberries, but it's rare.

I'm guilty though - I love salt.  I have low sodium levels though, so it's actually ok for me to salt my food.  When I run longer distances I have to eat salt packets from fast food restaurants...that's GROSS!

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • I don't add salt or sugar to anything, watching sodium and calories, that and it just seems a bit gross to me, I also don't use butter.
  • I very rarely cook with salt and never put it on my dish of food.  Same with sugar.  I drink unsweetened iced tea with lemon (no sugar) and never add sugar to anything.

I can tell you're a northerner!  There's no such thing as unsweet tea in the south.  I just can't drink it unsweet.

LOL!!!! Very true.  I work with a lot of Southerners (our home base is in NC) and they about die when they are up here and get unsweetened tea.  :)
