Exercising......

I was curious.
Should you exercise everyday or 3 days a week?

Which is better?

Which works better for you?

Re: Exercising......

  • I shoot for 4-5 days a week. I like to have at least one or two days of rest so that I'm not overdoing it, but for me 3 wasn't enough. My goal is 4 and if I get 5 I am thrilled. I don't want to set it for 5 and only do 4 because then I get upset at myself for not meeting my goal.

  • I caved....and exercised anyway lol.

I better try 3-4. 4-5 is a bit much for me, at this point, it's only my second week and when I tried 4 days last week my legs were cramped from my knees to my feet.

I think my problem is I want results quick, who doesn't, but I'm trying to keep myself realistic. I should have a good bit of weight lost by July, which is my goal.
However, losing 8 pounds in my first week makes me nervous that I obviously can't pull that every week, though that'd be amazing because that'd mean my goal would be met in about 6 1/2 weeks. lol. Which would be awesome considering DH's family is all blessed with the most amazing metabolism and all wear size 7 or smaller! and wear these bikini's I wore 4 years ago...then again they're about 2-4 years younger but yeah his other cousins are about 10 or 11+ years older than me.,
Either way 8 pounds each week isn't possible...so yeah I'll spare myself the mind set.

and ya'know i may do 4 minutes extra. I just worked 16 minutes...slowly gaining each day...or i'll finish with weights so I don't overexert myself so soon. ANother worry.

  • I work out 4-5 days a week. I was doing 5, and pretty happy with it, but DH told me he'd like me to do 4x a week so I had more 'evening time' one night a week. So we're trying that now.

I firmly believe your body needs rest days. That's not to say you can't be ACTIVE on those rest days, and you SHOULD be active on those rest days. It just doesn't have to be an all-out-sweat-till-you-die session. hehe

  • lol okay
    no sweat till i die

but i really must shower....be back later

  • the american heart?association?recommends 5 days a week for 30 min each day. ?

I agree with this... I do 4-5 days (typically 5 though) and on the other days I still walk the dogs so I am doing at least 30 minutes every single day.

  • The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 5 days a week for 30 minutes if you are doing a moderate intensity workout, 3 if you are doing a vigorous intensity workout but you can safely workout every day if you wanted.  Yes rest days are good for you but a light cardio workout could be considered rest depending on what your other workouts consist of.

You can read more about the guidelines here...

  • I was shooting for 5 days too, but when I'm only home and awake for 2 hours at night, it's been so difficult.

What do you recommend for very long work days when I'm exhausted, Jen?

I would say on those days just try to make sure you're active as much as possible through your regular activities (i.e. park your car further away, take the stairs instead of the elevator, maybe go for a walk during lunch, etc).  They did recently change part of the guidelines that the minimum amount of activity to be truly beneficial (cardio-wise) is 10 minutes.  So I would say shoot for 10 minutes at least during the day...which if you're in the lab you could probably use 10 minutes away from the work just to clear your head.  I know these days work has been so bad for me my boss was yelling at me for working through lunch Embarrassed

  • Yeah, I'm standing most of the day and constantly back and forth to monitors so I'm getting some exercise, just not enough.  At least you're right, my 15 min walk each way to my car every day with many flights is stairs is worth something.

Definitely worth something especially factoring in the standing, etc :)
