Elementary School teachers - Please come in!!

I have just relocated to the area (from upstate New York) and had a questions about the teaching certification here. I am certified Elementary and have been looking at the job postings for next year. Many of the jobs are looking for someone that is "highly qualified." What does it mean to be a highly qualified elementary teacher?

I know it's tough to get a job here as an elementary teacher but I at least want to get my hat out there in the ring, who knows what might happen! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Do you have a NJ certification? I'm pretty sure you'll have to obtain one. I have a friend that had to go thru a whole process to teach in NJ after teaching in PA. Info on Highly Qualified can be obtained here:

    Thank you so much for that link! I just received my certification in New Jersey and have been looking ever since. Since certification in New York is handled so differently, I was not really sure what highly qualified really meant. Thanks!

    Highly qualified status is from the whole No Child Left Behind thing. If you have an Elementary certificate you're highly qualified to teach whatever grades your certificate covers. If you want a job teaching a specific subject say in middle school you'd need a certificate in that particular subject area. Or if you had been teaching before they invented the middle school certifications, a certain amount of experience and classes on your transcript may gain you enough points to be highly qualified in a particular area.
    I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz

    You can also take the Praxis test to teach middle school, providing you have a certificate that covers up to 8th grade.  (Although if they reissued you a NJ license, chances are it was only K-5.)
