Sudden surge of ambition.

I'm suddenly determined to be cubicle-free in the next 5 years.  I started thinking about returning back to "the grind" on the way home from our HM and it made me feel...stuck.  I hated it.

My ultimate goal is to become a pastry chef.  Since I don't have the time or money to go to culinary school right now, I've decided that I'm going to take as many individual classes and read as many books on baking techniques as I can up until then.  I signed up for a chocolate class last night.  Best $50 I've spent in a long time.

I've also decided that I want to ride a donkey in and/or around the Grand Canyon.

Re: Sudden surge of ambition.

  • Good luck! You should definately do whatever you think will make you happy. Life is too short not to.

I've thought about the donkey ride too, but I weigh too much. There is a 200lb limit.. make sure your hubby knows this, since he won't be able to ride with you. (I know, I just shot your ass dream down. Sad)

  • Haha, been to the Grand Canyon, but didn't ride any donkeys.  I'm afraid they would sway too much and I'd fall off!!

Are you taking any classes at Le Academie de Cuisine?  We took one there - super expensive, but cool.  If you have a cheaper place and you like the class, let me know.

  • Slarce, the class I'm taking is through Cookology and was only $50.  I think it's still a relatively new program:

Sur La Table in Arlington offers classes, too.

I'd like to take one through L'Academie this summer, too.  They have a bit more to choose from.

  • Their classes fill up FAST.  Sign up for a catalog and schedule something right when they print their calendar of classes - the cool ones are gone very quickly.

Cookology is much more affordable, interesting

  • That sounds awesome. I sometimes get those spurts, but I am unable to follow through on them.

Good luck! We're here to support you all the way! Big Smile

Mike is short like me and he weighs under 200.  Needless to say, you don't want to run into us in a dark alley.  Intimidating stuff.

  • Lucky ducks. I'm really jealous of your ability to ride the donkeys. Even if I lost a few lbs, hubby is big boned.
  • Before I get mushy gushy I will start with this:  I so want to be a third wheel in that alley.  The three of us can be vertically challenged ninjas.

Now - I think it's awesome that you are doing what your doing.  I keep saying I will take a photography class and never do.  Even if I search for them, I just end up not doing it.  Drives me crazy.  I would REALLY love to get into childrens photography.  WOULD love to do it while I have kids, so I could stay home and only do it on the weekends.  I know I still have time, I just stay so darn busy!  UGH.

Plus I know part of me wants to kick my ass for not going back for teaching since I only have flucking 2 years left.  I just don't want to do it anymore.

  • Berri, can I be your guinea pig for any of your pastry concotions (sp?)?

Also, I want to ride a donkey!!!!

You should go after your goals.  After I separated my ex I took salsa lessons and had a blast.  I also became a soccer referee and I love that as well.

  • Huge kudos for following your dream!!  I have been feeling some pangs of wanting to do something creative (for a living) again, but just don't have the guts - or clear direction of what it would be.  I completely blame the wedding :(
  • I love that you are taking action!  I have the same thoughts often, but I just don't know what to do (I am not culinarily skilled Smile).

By the way, just so you are well-informed, the hoofed animals in the Grand Canyon are Mules.  They are bigger than donkeys, closer to horses.  We visited the GC on our honeymoon, and saw them.  Also, they poop everywhere!  And, apparently, they never fall on the trails, so no one needs to be worried about that.  If you really want to do that, you should start to look into it early, because the guided hiking/riding to the bottom is limited per day, and it fills up about a year in advance - we wanted to do it but planned too late.

Sorry that was such a long post!
