Recycling ?

Do any of you ladies live in towns that do not have a set recycling program?  Our little town has those big blue bins that you take your stuff to as opposed to having a big truck coming once a week/month to pick the stuff up.  What do you store your stuff in until you get the time to go to the big blue bins?  I'm trying to come up with a system, but unsure of what to do...should I get some Rubbermaid bins w/ lids for easier, mess-free transport, or tall plastic trash bins?  If you don't have town-provided bins, what do you use?  I thought I'd be able to find some sort of "recycling center" type set up at Lowes/HD, but alas, nothing.

I used to fill up plastic grocery bags w/ stuff and then once I had a few bags take them to the big blue bins, but now since we've switched to resuable grocery bags we no longer have the stash of plastic grocery bags to use.  Just looking for ideas!

Re: Recycling ?

  • Where I grew up they didn't have a mandated recycling program so we didn't recycle at home.  When we lived in our old apartment they had the giant bins that everyone just dumped their stuff in and things were sorted so you had paper in one big bin and plastic/glass in another.  I just use to use grocery bags at that time.  In our house now we're allowed to co-mingle which is nice.  We have a big rubbermaid type container that came with a lid.  I keep the lid on when its in our garage but then leave the lid in the garage when its time to go out to the curb on trash day.  I think I got it at walmart.  I didn't want something expensive b/c our development gets really windy and I've already had to chase down our bin!

I've seen some really nice recycling sorters that had compartments with a lid...I think it might of been at Costco?  Might be one at C&B too.  That is if you wanted something nice to sort everything into anyway.

charlene - we use big rubber maid totes with lids to separate our recyclables.  we use 2 totes.  one for glass and plastic and the other for paper and cardboard.  then when we go to the recycling center we just separate accordingly. i do know they have recycling storage bins for sale out there, but we already had extra totes we could use and this system really works for us.  hth.
  • Thanks girls.  I'm thinking we may just get a few Rubbermaid totes and try that route...if they don't work out we could always just wash out the totes and use them for something else.  In my head I envisioned a set up similar to the once Jen mentioned...something lidded w/ seperate compartments set up specifically for recycling.  We'll be keeping these bins in the basement at the bottom of the stairs in kind of a limited space and because I'm an anal freak I'm looking for something to nicely organize the chaos :)

charlene - elliot's cousin just got a nice recycling sorting center.  i just emailed her for the website and i will pass it on.
  • Those are nice Allie, thanks!!!  I'll have to measure a bit to see if they'll work in the space I'm thinking of.
