I can't believe people actually pay for this.

I read this in the New York Times this morning.  Only in America....

"Eating locally raised food is a growing trend. But who has time to get to the farmer?s market, let alone plant a garden?

That is where Trevor Paque comes in. For a fee, Mr. Paque, who lives in San Francisco, will build an organic garden in your backyard, weed it weekly and even harvest the bounty, gently placing a box of vegetables on the back porch when he leaves.

Call them the lazy locavores ? city dwellers who insist on eating food grown close to home but have no inclination to get their hands dirty. Mr. Paque is typical of a new breed of business owner serving their needs.

Even couples planning a wedding at the Plaza Hotel in New York City can jump on the local food train. For as little as $72 a person, they can offer guests a ?100-mile menu? of food from the caterer?s farm and neighboring fields in upstate New York.

?The highest form of luxury is now growing it yourself or paying other people to grow it for you,? said Corby Kummer, the food columnist and book author. ?This has become fashion.?"

Re: I can't believe people actually pay for this.

  • I gotta say, though, if I could make a living gardening for other people, I would probably do it.
  • I would pay for it. ?DH and I are dying for a garden, but don't really have the time or the patience to do it ourselves. ?I think it's a great idea!
  • Wow! DH and I had a garden in Jersey - green peppers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, broccoli, eggplant, butternut squash...I miss it! Can't wait to start one down here. Wouldn't pay someone else to take care of it, but I do miss it! Great idea though if people are willing to pay.

  • I'm so glad you brought it up. I would def. pay for a jump start.

I was telling Manny about your garden (we've been trying to grow one withno luck) and I wanted to get some advice on where to even start.

  • Thats pretty intresting.  I have absolutely no patience to garden.  My rose garden is a mess.  My poor herb garden has died several times over.  I keep trying but I have a serious black thumb.  My Great Grandma used to garden and do canning.  I definately did not receive that gene.  My hat off to those who can and do.
  • I can understand having someone to help you jump-start it, but I was raised in too frugal a household to pay someone to maintain it!

Nery, if you ever need some advice on growing veggies, I'd be happy to help you!

You'll be getting an email soon! :-)

  • If I had the extra $$, I'd probably pay for it too.  There's nothing like home-grown veggies!  (My in-laws have a garden in NY and I love to make salads with their veg).  But I have a black thumb!  I'm also not very enthusiastic about working in the yard/outside, especially when it gets hot!!

I don't think that I see anything much different than hiring landscape guys to come to do the lawn once a week.  This guy saw a need in the market and filled it.  Good for him.

  • I'd love to have a garden, but living in a townhouse, there's no way I can. I'd totally pay someone to do it for me, if the price was decent. It's not easy to find local food around here, esp. since the closest (good) farmer's market is in Winter Park.
  • I would totally pay to learn and then continue on my own.  I've always wanted to learn how to garden and one day have my own beautiful herb garden, flower garden.

My mother has a super green thumb so I hope it passes down.  I've never had my own space to try, but my hubby was talking about building me a herb garden ledge thingy.  We'll see how that goes.
